It’s easy to see how someone might think that sitting in meditation would be a terribly boring thing to do, just sitting there doing nothing. Trying to think of nothing. Trying to think of not thinking. Of course, that particular thought (like a lot of them) couldn’t be further from the truth.
In our current culture, parents are praised when their children are obedient – it’s a mark of good parenting. The quieter and the more obedient the child, the better. In truth, parents are doing a disservice to their children and to society when they demand that their children do exactly as they are told, no questions asked. In other words, expecting children to dutifully comply with their parents commands, right away, is not such a great idea in the long run.
Physicalism is the philosophical claim that only what is physical is real, where physical means: To be found or inferred by measurement and reason as existing in the world observable by the outer senses (mainly sight, hearing and touch). Physicalism is distinct from physics. Physics is (a) an activity based upon observing the world (by means of the outer senses), theorizing, experimenting and testing and (b) a body of knowledge which consists of truths established by this activity.
Beliefs are basically the scaffolding by which our present paradigm, worldview, or consensus reality has been built, propped up, and maintained. Though we don’t realize it, we are currently trapped between two opposing paradigms by the old scaffolding (false beliefs) because we refuse to see that the old scaffolding must be dismantled before our awareness can expand to the boundaries of the scaffolding of a new and less limiting paradigm.
The ritual is part of the nine-month therapy program at the Takiwasi Center, a cluster of rustic buildings on the edge of Tarapoto, Peru, a steamy town in the Amazon. Founded by Mabit in 1992, the center has treated nearly 1,000 drug addicts with a combination of psychotherapy and medicinal plants, including the ones mixed to make ayahuasca, a hallucinogen used by indigenous healers throughout the Amazon.
