Three Causes of Spiritual Illness

Waking Times

As we pass through life on the physical plane, things happen. We contract flus and colds and viruses, and we sustain physical injuries, like falling off our bikes as children or experiencing sports injuries. As adults, we may throw our back out or experience a serious car accident, in the process, acquiring bruises, cuts, sprains, infections, lacerations, and sometimes broken bones.

Some of us may also experience serious illnesses of an internal nature like cancer or hepatitis, heart disease or multiple sclerosis. Eventually we pass through old age and the progressive infirmity and death of the physical body. These are the givens–they are all to be expected as part of what it means to be an embodied, living being. But these are all effects, and what the shaman is primarily interested in is the cause.

Cause and Effect

In looking through the shamanic healer’s eyes, the ultimate causes of virtually all illness are to be found within the imaginal realms–in those same regions from which illness derives its initial power to affect us adversely. Because of this, it is not enough to simply suppress the effects of illness with medication on the physical plane and hope for the best. For true healing to occur, the causes of the illness must be addressed.

From the shaman’s perspective, there are three classic causes of illness, and interestingly, they are not microbes or bacteria or viruses. Rather, they are negative internal states that appear within us in response to negative or traumatic life experiences. The first among these is disharmony.

Disharmony

Disharmony is what we experience when life suddenly loses its meaning or when we have lost an important connection to life.

Let’s take the case of an elderly couple who have had a long marriage, and suddenly one of them dies. They may not have had a perfect relationship, yet there is a deep bond between them because of all they have shared together. The survivor may go into crisis upon the loss of their mate, and within a short time, he or she may come down with something medically challenging, like cancer. Suddenly, they’re gone too.

That’s disharmony.

The state of disharmony that we experience in response to such life situations causes a diminishment of our personal power. This can happen in a subtle manner on the one hand, or in a catastrophic, life-shaking way on the other like losing your job, and in the process losing your livelihood. When we experience disempowerment, or “power loss,” it affects our energetic matrix, rendering us vulnerable to illness.

Fear

The second classic cause of illness is fear. A person who is walking around with a chronic sense of fear gnawing away at them is doubly vulnerable to illness because their anxiety aggressively and progressively diminishes their sense of well-being, and this, in turn, affects their feeling of being safe in the world.

This sense of well-being is the base upon which our personal health system stands. When this foundation is affected negatively, it diminishes the ability of our immune system to function. And when our immune system goes down, we’re in trouble.

It’s not too difficult to see that there is a feedback mechanism at work here. Fear, and the anxiety it creates, produces disharmony. In the same breath, disharmony generates fear, and if the two of them are working together, it doubly affects the protective mantle of the body’s immune system, as well as the energetic matrix. Illness is the inevitable result.

It is no surprise to Western medical practitioners that disharmony and fear can manifest themselves in diseases that are recognizable to science. Almost 500 years ago, the Renaissance physician Paracelsus observed that “the fear of disease is more dangerous than the disease itself.”

This brings us to consider the third classic cause of illness–the phenomenon known to indigenous healers as soul loss.

Soul Loss

Among the traditionals, soul loss is regarded as the most serious diagnosis and the major cause of premature death and serious illness, yet curiously, it’s not even mentioned in our Western medical textbooks. The closest acknowledged context is “He/she has lost the will to live”.

In Western society, soul loss is most easily understood as damage to a person’s life essence, a phenomenon that usually occurs in response to trauma. When the trauma are severe, this may result in a fragmentation of that person’s soul cluster, with the shattered soul parts dissociating, fleeing an intolerable situation. In overwhelming circumstances, these soul parts may not return.

The causes of soul loss can be many and varied. There may be traumatic perinatal issues that happen around the child’s birth experience such as arriving into life only to discover that they are not wanted, or that they are the wrong gender—they’ve come in as a girl when everyone was hoping for a boy.

Soul loss can also occur when a child is mercilessly bullied or teased at home or at school, day after day, or when a young person is molested by the one who is supposed to be caring for them. When someone has been raped or assaulted, has suffered a shocking betrayal, a bitter divorce, a traumatic abortion, a terrible car accident, or even a serious surgery, soul loss is assured.

Many of the young men and women who were sent to war in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Viet Nam, Korea and beyond, came home personally damaged because they had suffered terrible soul loss. Our medical specialists labeled their disorders as post-traumatic stress syndrome, but they had little to offer these “walking wounded” in terms of true healing, and many who survived are still deeply traumatized at the soul level by what happened to them in war.

Symptoms of Soul Loss

Soul loss is easily recognizable if you know what you’re looking for. Here’s a checklist of some of the classic symptoms:

  • feelings of being fragmented, of not being all here.
  • blocked memory–an inability to remember parts of one’s life.
  • an inability to feel love or receive love from another.
  • emotional remoteness.
  • a sudden onset of apathy or listlessness.
  • a lack of initiative or enthusiasm.
  • a lack of joy.
  • a failure to thrive.
  • an inability to make decisions.
  • an inability to discriminate.
  • chronic negativity.
  • addictions.
  • suicidal tendencies.
  • melancholy or despair.
  • chronic depression.

Perhaps the most common symptom of soul loss is depression. In the early 1990s, Time magazine did a cover story on depression in America that revealed 60 million Americans were taking anti-depressant drugs on a daily basis, representing about 30% of our population.

Today that number is closer to 80 million, representing about 40% of society at large, and sometimes that number jumps in response to a national trauma. On the Friday following 9/11, a television newscast revealed that 7 out of 10 Americans polled were experiencing significant depression in response to the tragedy, an indicator of soul loss on a national scale.

Although the term “soul loss” is not familiar to most Westerners, examples of it are expressed daily in our language and descriptions of personal hardships. Media interviews and news reports include individuals’ comments such as “I lost a part of myself when that (trauma) happened” and “I have not been the same since.” When discussing soul loss with inquiring individuals, most everyone has a sense of having lost a “part” of themselves at some time in life, yet virtually no one has the awareness that the missing part(s) could be recovered.

They can.

The Vedic Vaishnava philosophy of Achintya Bheda Bheda Tattva, or ‘simultaneous and inconceivable sameness and difference’ holds that all atomic sized individual souls all find the greater part of their self-cognitive faculty within the communal Supersoul. The infinite Supersoul is also Lord of all the Gods, and each jiva soul is a ‘demigod’ when fully awake in the spiritual world, Vaikuntha.

So, we are all part of God, Krishna, but, we do not merely sense inside the tiny confines of our own limited spatial dimension. Rather, Krishna dovetails His self knowledge of infinitude with our awareness in the spiritual dimension in varying degrees, so that we can sense His spiritual infinity within us, as we pass through Him, and He passes through us.

It is written in the Vedic scriptures that all souls are strung like pearls upon a thread, so Krishna passes through every single soul in existence, linking all, as part of one vast body.

It is also said that all these souls, when in the enlightened state, are, together, Krishna, though the position of Lord Krishna, the soul with cosmic spatial dimension, who is the spiritual ‘anchor man’ and spiritual ‘tuning fork’ for all of us, is always remembered by these souls first and foremost, as no other soul but Him can give us cosmic awareness.

So the ultimate source of spiritual illness in my view is turning away from Krishna, our constitutional Supersoul, or Higher Self, and Lord God, and then turning to other souls as a principal source of companionship, when those souls are merely atomic sized as we are, and thus cannot provide the cosmic aspect of our own self-perception, as, though jivas and Krishna are distinct beings apart from each other, the jiva cannot gain perception of infinity except by dovetailing awareness with the one infinite soul. Then only, in relation with living infinity, Krishna, can the individual jiva souls be truly satisfied as parts of God, Krishna.

    • Srivatsa says:

Interesting, my ancestors were not only smart but visionaries who used names and forms to help fellow human understand the concept. Unfortunately, people are made to believe Krishna, Vishnu, Shiva, Allah or Jesus are “GOD”. Bhagavad Gita as the Bible of Hindus and Hinduism is a Religion.

The one and the only rule you must follow is to speak the “TRUTH” even though this act may result in endangering your life, if not you will suffer all your life. You must know the guilt of lying is more harmful than the suffering you go through for defending the truth.

      • mothman777 says:

Vaishnava teachers, including Narada Muni, who actually travels throughout the spiritual cosmos and this material cosmos to teach, consider Krishna to be an actual soul, with eternal form, with Him being the central nexus of a vast cosmic body of souls who all have eternal identities and forms.

Krishna and His devotee souls, constituting a solid, infinite mass of eternal, individual souls, are an eternal family, and all souls without exception originate within the highest plane, in fact having no beginning at all, since that is the timeless eternal constitutional nature of infinity, pure, living, blissful, ecstatic souls all in communion with each other via the Godhead, Krishna.

I know that there are many ideas of how the Bhagavad Gita should be interpreted, with over 800 differing commentaries by different ‘gurus’.

Some do indeed consider, as you do, Krishna to be merely a form that is visualized to help understand a particular concept, but I believe, and experience, that Krishna really does have a form. I was initiated in a Vaishnava Math many years ago.

In the spiritual world, the Vaikuntha planets, though Krishna is the very ground people walk on, the water they swim in, the air they fly in, still yet those living spiritual elements are not His principal revelation that gives total enlightenment and total self-cognizance to each individual jiva soul.

So that they can know themselves as they really are, in order for full consciousness of each soul to be achieved, even though the Vaikuntha planets are all in fact aspects of the one supreme soul, Krishna, Himself, the non-formless aspect of the Supreme, Krishna, Govinda, is called for.

Krishna can move through all His formless aspect in Vaikuntha without actually moving, so to speak, and manifest His Krishna, or Govinda form, as He does in His murti forms in this world, and of course, in this age of Kali Yuga, He is also available in His sound incarnation as the Hare Krishna maha mantra, so that all sincere people can very easily enter into His direct association, and the more you develop, the more you experience the living form of Krishna, and your own true, eternal spiritual nature.

The key is to empathize with the benevolent nature that Krishna has towards all the cosmos, without having any ulterior motive, knowing that His direct association is the greater part of the self-cognitive faculty of all, by which everyone might achieve their greatest happiness.

  2. Werner says:

In my healing sessions I routinely give soulretrievals as everyone has soulloss. It is not the severity of the event but the reaction towards it, meaning a soulloss cann happen even through seemingly all day events.

Dissociation is at epidemic levels. Every dissociation rips a gap into our consciousness and leaves an empty space. Then there is no compassion. Only coldness, zynism, desinteresse etc. without consciousness there is no perception of what is happening.

To come into ‘ayni’, the right relationship to everything (people, nature, objects, spirits, demons etc), one needs to see, needs to be aware, needs to have compassion.

  3. mothman777 says:

I consider that perhaps some misidentify the soul with certain parts of the subtle material body, sheaths of which can indeed become fragmented and separated from each other.

Each living being has just one soul, though Lord Krishna as Paramatma, or Supersoul, lives also in the heart chakra of each being in the material world, so the jiva soul lives together with the Paramatma in the heart, and a further aspect of the Supersoul lives also even within the centre of each atomic-sized jiva, as previously stated, like a thread passing through the centre of every jiva soul throughout infinity, in all species, in all dimensions.

The Supreme Lord Krishna, oversoul and greater aspect of all individual jiva souls, is said in the Bhagavad Gita to be greater than the greatest in spatial dimensions, and smaller than the smallest.

However, the jiva soul itself, according to the Bhagavad Gita, which is situated suspended in life airs of prana within the anahata chakra, or heart chakra, within the heart of all creatures, is eternally undividable; it cannot be cut, burnt, or destroyed in any way; it is eternal.

Only the attention of the soul can become fragmented, not the soul itself.

  4. The best and clearest explanations for those with an open mind about the causes of spiritual illness and reality can be found in the writings of Dr Joseph Chiappalone MD. Suggest looking up his writings and deciding for yourself by making up your own mind. Look on the internet for: chiappalone awakening rense

    • mothman777 says:

Hmm, his stuff is very interesting and thought provoking, but ultimately not in a very productive way, as I find he does not really understand the true position or nature of Krishna, or of Shiva. He makes out he believes in Krishna, but he does not believe in the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, that all beings have a living soul, and that all can eventually go back to the spiritual world. My own intuition is that his beliefs are enforced by fear, like something will happen to you if you don’t believe in him. He is an egomaniac.

He uses his own variant belief of Gnosticism, based on the standard Gnostic beliefs, with a bit extra chucked in for a bit of spice.

For instance the usual Gnostic belief is there that the Earth was made by an evil demiurge, and that some of us are pure spiritual beings who are being held prisoner in evil bodies that force us to sin, against the will and purpose of the real God. The extra bits he adds on, spaceships coming to rescue the real, viable souls etc. makes it all sound like a very Ron Hubbardish type of philosophy, and he does cast himself in the role of a type of world saviour, from what I have read of his stuff at least, in that he claims that he will be instrumental in rescuing ‘viable’ souls from this false planet.

Personally, I think we will be waiting for ever for this personality cult stuff of his to come true, just like we have been waiting a long time for The Jehovha’s Witnesses’ stuff to come true.

Dr Joseph Chiappalone had a partner who he got along with for a long time, then he suddenly declared he had discovered that she was in fact after all, merely another non-viable or a robot without a soul or something. He is an extremely forceful and domineering personality who I think has the personality to frighten people into following him if they are the type who will allow themselves to be led on a wild goose chase to satisfy his massive ego, and he might catch a few souls who are vulnerable after leaving mainstream religions who are looking for something to fill a void in their lives.

There are some very telepathic people around, some with a kind of ‘cosmic consciousness’ siddhi that they misinterpret and abuse others with, stating that they are working with special beings to save the willing souls or whatever.

In history there have been very powerful psychic yogis with very powerful siddhis falsely claiming they were Krishna or Shiva, and doing great healing works, all well and good you may say, but that is nothing for a yogi on the dark side who wants to con people to believe he is God to satisfy his own ego.

After all, they say that is the last test God will give you, when he tempts you to believe you are God, and many people go for it, and it turns bad. There was a case in India over a century ago, and the man thought he was Krishna, and did heal some people, but also insisted on having sex with everyone’s wives, and when a local Vaishnava, who was also a magistrate went to arrest him, he cursed the magistrate that his son would be very ill, and the magistrate dashed home to find his son gravely ill. So these charlatans are frightening at times, but they are not really God. That charlatan got put in prison, and an English assistant to the Vaishnava Magistrate dashed forward and cut off the fake God-mans locks of hair, which had been helping him to manifest a great deal of his mystic powers. The man was a breatharian, but, nonetheless, after his hair wa sremoved, he wasted awya and dies in prsion. I personally think what Chaiappalone teaches is a load of bollocks What a load of bollocks, Id you want a qucik ride into mental innllenss, then follow Chiappalonie, Maybe he will tell you you are ‘ non-vianle too.we are all pure t and the man who claims he is Shiva, Haidakan Baba. I have seen Haidakan Baba quite a few times and he always at leats appears very benevolent, but aft6er readinalso he has weird views on some people not being ‘viable’ and stuff like that, like he believes some people are effectively just a type of biological robots without souls. I choose to believe there is no eternal Satan, and no eternally damned or damnable souls.

The God-man fake stopped eating food in prison, and though he possessed various powerful siddhis, after his hair was removed, he wasted away and died

I personally think what Dr Chiappalone teaches is a load of bollocks.

If you want to risk a quick ride into mental illness, then his science fiction beliefs that are full of fear-inducing rubbish could harm you in some way, or others around you, if he leads you to believe that members of your family are non-viables, demons, or robots. Maybe if you question him, he will tell you that you are a non-viable too, and freak you out.

I myself choose to believe in the genuine teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, that there is no eternal Satan, and no eternally damned or damnable souls, and that Lord Krishna makes all the planets by his arrangement through Lord Brahma, and not some Godless demon. Sri Brahma Samhita reveals how Lord Krishna instructs Lord Brahma to create all the planets in this universe, and Lord Brahma is one of the 12 great knowers of God, Lord Krishna, the Supreme Creator. Lord Brahma is not the demon that Dr Chiappalone might suppose.

  7. lar says:

so how does one retrieve the lost pieces of the soul?

    • mothman777 says:

An interesting point. The exercise of ‘soul-retrieval’ itself should be a very beneficial thing, as even though the name of the exercise is based on a misunderstanding of what is actually missing, the actual perception that something is missing is not.

Just as if we had a stroke which altered our personality and cognitive abilities, we might think we had lost part of our ‘self’.

Similarly, parts of our subtle bodies that enable specific types of sensitivity and cognitive ability may be bound up in a memory of a particular;y traumatic event, and become repressed, along with the that part of the subtle body also.

Thought can be very physical in it’s perception sometimes, and the subtle bodies that surround us in various sheaths sometimes give us the sensation of vibes that we feel quite physically. Sometimes we can repress, or even be driven to repress certain traumatic events in our lives, and when this happens, the very piece of equipment in our aura that allows us that level of experience becomes shut off, closed down, and may indeed even become physically displaced from the aura, by a black magician for instance, who is jealous of the aura of someone else and desires the levels of perception that the victim has person has, so traumatizes the victim to repress or otherwise ‘let go’ of that part of their subtle body that enables that level of sensitivity.

The black magician may successfully traumatize the victim into feeling that if they ‘let go’, everything will be alright, but what the victim does not comprehend, is that they have not only let go of a thought, they have also let go of part of their perceptual apparatus withing their subtle body, which the black magician then holds on to, to use that as an addition to their own sense apparatus, whichilst ist also goive sthem the opportunity to enter the victims conciousness remotely and thus feed off, in a similar manner to the way an artificially constructed elemntal when intserted into the victim’s aura can accomplisha similar effect, even enabling psychic control of the victim o various degrees, also enablisng the ictim to be spied upon by remote viewng more easily. The therapist can look at all these factors, and see at what point in the moment of eternal time that consciousness become trapped in a partuicular part of the subtle body, and use eitther psychlogical methods to reawaken the numbe d part of the faulties (just a like a psychotherapist halps a frigid or impotent person to overcome emotional trauma to reqwaken their sexual abilities), or evn physical methoda to literally find a lost part of the subtle body, which may have to be taken back from a thief, or back from soem subtle plane where that part of the aura might simply have been lost dutring some astral encounter, where osomeone may have ‘let go’ a little too far and premarurely disengaged pat of their subtle body, in an altered state of consciousness for instance. Some unenlightened magical processes call for the removal of some part of the subtle body as an aid to ‘enlightenment’, and enlightened people really do have very small subtle bodies, as they disengage themsleves from addiction to the lower levels of material consciousness, though to physically remove a [art of the aura is very dangerous and can precipitate insanity, as any part of the subtle body that should diminsih during enlightenemnt, should only do sso entirley naturally, as a consequence of enlightenement, and not artificially, in a misguided and clumsy attempt to precipitate enlightmnet, by using psychic surgery to imitate the subtle body of an enlightened person. The auras of yogis and the mentallly ill are very similar for this very reason. The subtle bodies act as a kind of veil to protect us against uncomfortable and excessive levels of psychic sensitivty before we are ready to shed these veils. When someone damages their own subtle bodies through excessive drugs for instance (or someone else on excessive drugs does it to them), then the sufferer is far too open to hundreds of orther minds and goes loopy without proper understanding of what is going on. I always choose the association of Krishna first and oremest in all thjings, to maintin personal balance and safety.

CURIOUSLY ENOUGH, I HAD THE VERY CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS VERY GLITCH WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN A GOOD 30 SECONDS BEFORE IT EVEN INITIATED … VERY STRANGE.

RECOMMENCED FROM START OF FIFTH PARAGRAPH:

… The black magician may successfully traumatize the victim into feeling that if they ‘let go’, everything will be alright, but what the victim does not comprehend, is that they have not only let go of a thought, they have also let go of part of their perceptual apparatus within their subtle body, which the black magician then holds on to, to use that as an addition to their own sense apparatus. This also gives the black magician the opportunity to enter the victim’s consciousness remotely and thus feed off the victim, in a similar manner to the way an artificially constructed elemental, when inserted into the victim’s aura, can accomplish a similar effect, even enabling psychic control of the victim to various degrees, also enabling the victim to be spied upon by remote viewing more easily.

The therapist can look at all these factors, and see at what point in the moment of eternal time that consciousness become trapped in a particular part of the subtle body, and use either psychological methods to reawaken the numbed part of the faculties (just like a psychotherapist helps a frigid or impotent person to overcome emotional trauma to reawaken their sexual abilities), or even physical methods to literally find a lost part of the subtle body, which may have to be taken back from a thief, or back from some subtle plane where that part of the aura might simply have been lost during some astral encounter, where someone may have ‘let go’ a little too far, and prematurely disengaged pat of their subtle body, in an altered state of consciousness for instance.

Some unenlightened magical processes call for the removal of some part of the subtle body as an aid to ‘enlightenment’, and enlightened people really do have very small subtle bodies, as they progressively disengage themselves from addiction to the various levels of material consciousness. Though to physically remove a part of the aura is very dangerous and can precipitate insanity, as any part of the subtle body that should diminish during enlightenment, should only do so entirely naturally, as a consequence of enlightenment, and not artificially, in a misguided and clumsy attempt to precipitate enlightenment. Some misguided neophytes mistakenly attempt the use of psychic surgery to imitate the subtle body of an enlightened person.

The auras of yogis and the mentally ill are very similar in some ways, the mentally ill finding themselves hopelessly enmeshed in very complex psychic circumstances that they feel impossible to understand, as their subtle bodies become reduced through damage caused by drugs etc., and they become opened up to a vaster planes of perception for which they are not prepared with spiritual knowledge, whilst, on the other hand, there is natural shrinkage of the subtle body of the yogis during enlightenment over the years.

The subtle bodies act as a kind of veil to protect us against uncomfortable and excessive levels of psychic sensitivity, before we are genuinely spiritually ready to shed these veils and enter into greater realms of sensitivity. When someone damages their own subtle bodies through excessive drugs for instance (or someone else on excessive drugs does it to them), then the sufferer is far too open to hundreds of other minds, and various different planes, and goes loopy without proper understanding of what is going on.

I always choose the association of Krishna first and foremost in all things, to maintain personal balance and safety.
