As the weather warms across much of the world, Occupiers are retaking public space. Even after we were violently removed from many of our home encampments last fall and winter, we never stopped organizing – and now we are back outside. With the rebirth of spring, re-occupation has begun in earnest.

Acknowledging these downfalls of our current monetary system, some alternatives arise. These so-called complementary currencies are designed to encourage investing in productive assets rather than hoarding. On top of that, they encourage (local) trade and cooperation and are less susceptible to inflation because they are backed by an external reference such as a commodity or service rather than the fiat of a central authority. They come in various colours and flavours, some of which we’ll explore below.
The Daily Mail reports on a town of 3,000 called Villamayor de Santiago, where “rebellious” locals have reintroduced the peseta in a project to thwart the failing euro after inflation has driven up the price of essential goods 43 per cent. The cost of bread is up by 49 per cent, milk 48 per cent, and the price of potatoes is up 116 per cent. All while a third of this small town is out of work.
A thought experiment. Imagine that the euro would collapse. Greece, Spain, Italy and Spain follow suit. And eventually the Netherlands. Banks collapse and cash withdrawal will be impossible. A disaster? Most likely. But still; it would give us an opportunity to discover that it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Could the world survive without money? That thought fascinates three young professionals. They believe it would. Recently they gave up their jobs and security to use their strengths for the creation of a gift economy.
