Waking Times

At some point in your life, you will experience the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ where it seems that everything that can possibly go wrong, will go wrong.  What many people fail to realize is that this is a true blessing.

The ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ occurs when your life appears to hit rock bottom.  You may experience a plethora of ‘bad breaks’ in your personal life, financially, mentally and/or physically.

What typically happens during the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ is that we get so pounded by all of these experiences that we end up reflecting on “Why did this happen to me?”

When The Cleansing Begins

At first, you may feel hatred towards those who contributed to your ‘Dark Night of the Soul’.  You might question the Creator and feel as though your spirit guides and guardian angels have failed you.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Eventually, you realize that you needed to experience everything that you went through in order to grow spiritually.

In time, you will end up surrendering yourself and your ego to whatever the Universe has in store for you as if it is all now in the “Creator’s hands”.  This is where the cleansing begins.

There is no coming to consciousness without pain. People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing their own soul. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.

~ Carl Gustav Jung

Your Soul Contract, Guides and Guardian Angels

Before you incarnated here,  you made a soul contract that involved everyone who led you to your ‘Dark Night of the Soul’. When you were on the other side of the veil, you specifically chose these people to help you grow spiritually.  Some of these people may have also had previous karmic relationships with you in which you both needed to try to resolve in this incarnation.

Your spirit guides and guardian angels are with you every second of your life.  When you feel pain and sorrow, they do too.  As much as they want to see you happy, they also realize that you need to experience certain life situations in order to grow spiritually.  Every day, you are being guided in the right direction towards fulfilling your life’s purpose and that guidance includes experiencing the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’.

Letting go of our images of God can be terrifying. It is often the result of an experience of suffering in our lives, when our previous understanding is no longer adequate to give meaning to what has happened to us. When my mother died suddenly in my early thirties, I was thrust into the desert. All of my certainties about God and life were stripped away and I was left raw and frightened. Many people offered trite words and shallow comfort in my grief, they were not willing to sit with me in the darkness, but only hoped to rush me through to a place of light.

This is the mystical experience of the “dark night of the soul,” when old convictions and conformities dissolve into nothingness and we are called to stand naked to the terror of the unknown. We must let the process move through us—one which is much greater than we can comprehend. We can never force our way back to the light. It is only in this place of absolute surrender that the new possibility can emerge. We don’t just have one dark night in our lives, but again and again, as we are called to continue releasing the images we cling to so tightly.

~ Christine Valters Paintner

A Blessing In Disguise

The true blessing of the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ is the spiritual cleansing that you receive.  When you have reached the ‘DarkNight of the Soul,’ you have reached your lowest point in this incarnation.  To that I say, “Congratulations!”  From this day forward, your life will take on a new meaning as you begin to understand why everything HAD to happen the way it did.  Once you come out on the other side of the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ you will gain a new perspective and appreciation of what you had to go through and these experiences will exponentially magnify your spiritual progression.

Typically, many people will experience the loss of ego for the first time in their life during the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’.  This can be a very humbling experience. We typically associate a title or our accomplishments with who we are but fail to see that ultimately, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.  When we lose our ego, we can finally connect to our spiritual essence because we are no longer associating ourselves with society’s preconception (or our own preconception) of who we are.

The ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ gives us a new sense of appreciation for all that is good in life and shows us how little we truly need to be happy.

But the most important aspect gained through the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ is the connectedness we receive through our transformation of consciousness.  It’s as if you are given a new lease on life.  You stop blaming other people and begin to look within for answers.  You learn forgiveness and gratitude. You realize that you needed to have these experiences in order to get you pointed in a new direction that will facilitate your spiritual growth and life purpose.

“It is precisely because we resist the darkness in ourselves that we miss the depths of the loveliness, beauty, brilliance, creativity, and joy that lie at our core.”

~ Thomas Moore, Dark Nights of the Soul

If You Are Currently Experiencing The Dark Night Of The Soul

If you are currently experiencing the ‘Dark Night of the Soul,’ I can assure you that there are much happier and fulfilling days ahead of you.  At some point, you should put your faith in the Creator’s hands and know that you are always being divinely guided toward your life purpose.

Look at where your life has taken you and what direction you are being shown to go.  Try to forgive those who have led you toyour ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ as well as forgiving yourself.

Don’t try to force any immediate changes because they will come to you when you are ready. Sometimes during the dark night of the soul, the best thing to do is nothing and just live in the “now”.

While it may not seem like it right now, the people who led you to this point are most likely part of your soul group.  On the other side of the veil, they loved you so much that they volunteered to lead you into the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’ if you ever got to the point of where you were veering from your life’s purpose… even if it meant that they would no longer be part of your life during this incarnation.

The best way to look at the dark night of the soul is to compare it to a butterfly.  Before your dark night, you were a slow moving caterpillar who was limited to a small area because of your lack of mobility.  You didn’t realize how much more you were capable of doing until you spun your cocoon. Once you emerged from your cocoon, you transformed yourself into a beautiful butterfly whose boundaries were limitless! In this analogy, the cocoon is where you do “nothing” except going within.  You are on the verge of a spiritual transformation, so let go of your ego, surrender to the Universe and soon you’ll be spreading your wings in flight!

What if you experience this “Dark Night of the Soul” more than once in your lifetime? Because I feel that I have experienced it a few times, and am currently going through it as well. I feel that it is a depression, but not just that – it is also like a demon or darkness is taking over my soul and it forms itself into this self-hatred. But I eventually come out of it into the light.

    • Edd

A lesson will repeat itself until it is learned. <3

I doubt that the Jew who scrawled, “If there is a God, he will have to beg me for my forgiveness” on the wall of his cell in one of the concentration camps had his ordeal take on, “a new meaning as..(he began)to understand why everything HAD to happen the way it did.” “OH! *palms forehead* I understand now! I HAD to watch my family get exterminated for nothing and asphyxiate in darkness and filth, likewise for nothing, to understand this infinite blessing of love the creator has had in store for me! What a boon!”

Please. Sometimes life is genuinely good, and that should be appreciated, but when it’s bad, it can get almost infinitely bad, and no philosophy or explanation or plan or love of God can touch the arid truth of that.

    • RMK

And when the soul of that man crossed over, he remembered why he went through the concentration camp. It was never God’s choice to put him there, the soul wanted that to either learn from it, help others, or complete his karma. My soul was a Vietnamese girl during the war and she was shot in the head. Most likely my soul went through that due to one of my soul’s many suicides. You kill yourself in one life, you die tragically and early in another. God didn’t do that to me, I co-created my own mess. You reap what you sow! Jesus warned us—we just don’t listen and then whine that God does this to us when all the time God has been warning us to NOT live by the sword since you die by the sword due to the Laws of Karma. We KNEW this coming here!

Read the Bhagavad Gita or Buddhism–they actually are right about this. Read Edgar Cayce or study Jewish mysticism–they are actually right about this.

If you blame God for what happens here, you don’t understand why your soul really is here; therefore, you would be considered an ignorant soul but you can awaken if you so choose. Your choice—stay asleep and blame everyone including God for what happens to you all the while you keep digging yourself into a deeper negative karmatic hole or choose to awaken and understand there are no victims! Souls choose their fate for many reasons. Seek the answers! You will learn to let go of things you cannot change for another all the while becoming a great example for others to follow. Anger gets you no where in the end—that is meaningless! Becoming an enlightened soul helps others become better themselves; therefore, negative karma starts to be decreased. I have helped others through helping myself awaken. Your choice!

I wonder if the planet Saturn being in your star sign has anything to do with the ‘Dark Night of the Soul.’

having a really dark night have experienced a lot of pain in my life but have always had the attitude that i will not be beaten but for some strange reason at this moment in my life cannot get the strength to fight it this is not my normal self as i am a very strong person do not understand why this is happening wondering if anyone else is experiencing this

      • Rachel

I can relate to you. We are being bombarded (all over earth) with chemtrail nano-fibers and electromagnetic frequencies. This constant anti-life daily assault is causing physical illness that makes us tired, depressed and unable to feel the joy we once did. The best thing to do is to learn about detoxification through the most natural methods possible starting with chelation (the core of the problem and cause of conductivity in our bodies) and get busy. Expect this to take years and stay strong, one step at a time. The focus should be the five elements:

air:very high quality air cleaners that absorb chemicals.

fire:EMF protection, lookup faraday cage and research.

water:reverse osmosis to remove nano-fibers the best possible and then replace lost minerals with suppliments/sea salt.

earth:the cleanest most organic food possible, preferrably greenhouse grown to keep out the chemtrail fallout as much as possible. Grow your own if you can.

spirit/love: meditate everyday, or if you’re like me and can’t seem to sit still do something artistic, paint, dance, glue popsickle sticks together, play music. Make yourself do something artistic or creative EVERYDAY, something that makes you not have to think while you create, something simple.

Don’t give up. The strongest of us feel the most pain because we can handle it. You can handle it. Fight with everything you’ve got–and when you feel really down, remember the most joyous times in your life and KNOW you can feel that joy again! We are all much stronger than we think we are, but we are under attack and our strength is tested constantly. I have been fighting the misery for five years since my joy seems to have been taken from me. Living as purely as possible has brought back some joy, even though I cannot leave my house without a gas mask or socialise with people due to chemical sensitivities. Health in our bodies = health in our minds.

Just start by juicing vegetables even if it tastes bad. You’ll see in time. (I have morgellons so I know what it is to feel really bad, as others like me have learned)

This article is a beautiful portrait of a deep experience, and contains some good advice.

I have come to think on my dark nights as truly magical, in a Halloween, romantic sort of way. Even horror has its beauty – it is so beautifully stark and cold.

Occasionally we pass through vortexes. Even practiced psychics cannot see beyond them, to where they will take one. One must simply enter without knowing. Like being dipped in the river of Oneness, trusting in the river. Nor can we bring unlimited baggage, and some memories get lost.

Yet one may sort-of-master this process of losing mastery, losing control. If one gives oneself to it, it can be sublime, suffering without suffering. A kind of quiet joy.

“The dance is always danced over the abyss.”

Life is appalling if you even glimpse it without your human glasses. Its vastness, and the realization of the wild luck that everything we cherish depends on is terrifying. And every one of us faces a known ending: ‘death’.

“No one’s getting out of here alive!”

“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.” (aka ‘get it while the gettin’s good’). And that’s ultimately what people come out of a dark night seeing: get livin or get dyin. Time is short, yet endless.

It can be added that groups of people, even whole countries and planets, go through collective dark nights, as memorialized in airplane disaster movies, environmental disaster movies, etc. Group dynamics change, people change.

Nothing in life is a random happening – it’s all the soul at work. Just being aware of that can change everything.

Does Halloween make you happy or afraid? Both! And deliciously alive.

It must take some courage to be so determined about defending the ultimate negativity and futility of existence, especially in the face of such a mountain of evidence to the contrary. And I am no stranger to dark nights of the soul either.

    • Rachel

Please elaborate on the “evidence to the contrary.” I would like to hear more.

  • Archie

Thank you for this article . . so true there cannot be light without the dark . . I heve an interest in Hermetic Philosophy and what it can offer in understanding the ‘mystery’ of Life etc. However it is not a subject to be jumped into but it has been said that it can only truly be approached when one is ready for it. So I would tentatively add this view and apologise for its length and use of quotations.

“Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.” — The Kybalion.

“The great Fourth Hermetic Principle — the Principle of Polarity — embodies the truth that all manifested things have “two sides”; “two aspects”; “two poles”; a “pair of opposites,” with manifold degrees between the two extremes. The old paradoxes, which have ever perplexed the mind of men, are explained by an understanding of this Principle. Man has always recognized something akin to this Principle, and has endeavored to express it by such sayings, maxims and aphorisms as the following: Everything is and isn’t, at the same time”; “all truths are but half-truths”; “every truth is half-false”; “there are two sides to everything”; “there is a reverse side to every shield,” etc., etc.” — The Kybalion.

As we progress from Dark to light our vibration increases and our spirituality advances. Letting go of the ‘ego’, understanding how we are being manipulated by the materialistic world are essential steps on our progress to understanding what being happy entails and fridding oursleves of the fear they induce.

Love and Hate are poles of the same scale –

again from the Kybalion: “And so it is on the Mental Plane. “Love and Hate” are generally regarded as being things diametrically opposed to each other; entirely different; unreconcilable. But we apply the Principle of Polarity; we find that there is no such thing as Absolute Love or Absolute hate, as distinguished from each other. The two are merely terms applied to the two poles of the same thing. Beginning at any point of the scale we find “more love,” or “less hate,” as we ascend the scale; and “more hate” or “less love” as we descend — this being true no matter from what point, high or low, we may start. There are degrees of Love and hate, and there is a middle point where “Like and Dislike” become so faint that it is difficult to distinguish between them. Courage and Fear come under the same rule. The Pairs of Opposites exist everywhere. Where you find one thing you find its opposite — the two poles.

“And it is this fact that enables the Hermetist to transmute one mental state into another, along the lines of Polarisation. Things belonging to different classes cannot be transmuted into each other, but things of the same class may be changed, that is, may have their polarity changed. Thus Love never becomes East or West, or Red or Violet — but it may and often does turn into Hate and likewise Hate may be transformed into Love, by changing its polarity. Courage may be transmuted into Fear, and the reverse. Hard things may be rendered Soft. Dull things become Sharp. Hot things become Cold. And so on, the transmutation always being between things of the same kind of different degrees. Take the case of a Fearful man. By raising his mental vibrations along the line of Fear-Courage, he can be filled with the highest degree of Courage and Fearlessness. And, likewise, the Slothful man may change himself into an Active, Energetic individual, simply by polarizing along the lines of the desired quality.”

As with much else of worth this is easier said than done but is worth the journey in my opinion. . . . and life is for learning, is it not . . . ?

. . . . with much Divine Love, Peace, Harmony and Understanding to all…

Ive seen pigs flying too…. Anyway the name of this site is very misleading: it should be “dumbing down times”. The so-called info we see here is nothing but bollocks that have little or nothing to do with reality. Censore or delete me, it means nothing. Facts are facts.

    • you

The fact of the matter is, you don’t know, but like to think you do.

    • Manimal

Reality is purely a perception of the individual mind. Since there are NO two minds that are the same, therefore there are NO two same perceptions of reality. So, what is sane for someone, can be complete madness to another. If you think that this site is bolloks, enjoy YOUR “reality”:-). Oh… Facts? Close your eyes and ears and what happens to “facts” and “reality”? Just a thought to piss you off a little…;-)

Nice article, I have had the phrase ‘Dark Night Of The Soul’ bouncing round my head for a while and now I understand why. IT truly is a humbling process and feels relentless at times, so it is good to be reminded that there is a reason why it happens.

  • dimitri ledkovsky

Reminder: it’s never just one night. It can go on for YEARS.

    • Rachel

      I agree. YEARS.

    • Anonymous

Yes, and for some of us it goes on for a whole lifetime, negating all of its supposedly positive purpose.

I always told myself it was “The Dark Cloud”. I think the true learning from this idea is the Pain. To kind of give you a low point in your life which makes you appreciate it better when things are going well. I’ve never had them last or be on going. Good lord if that happened to me Id be dead from the bad luck. I seem to have the cloud come around about 3 times a year and go away. One day. Ill count myself lucky I think!

  • Terri

Thank you for this post. Although I’m emerging from my dark night, it has been a two year process, and excruciatingly painful at times. It seems so many either haven’t been through this, or do not write about it. Preferring to only to speak of rainbows and unicorns.
