The Spiritual Nature of Hair

“Our hair fashions might be just a trend, but if we investigate, we may find that we have been depriving ourselves of one of the most valuable sources of energy for human vitality.” –Yogi Bhajan

Consider the possibility that the hair on your head is there to do more than just look good. Man is the only creature who grows longer hair on his head as he grows into adulthood. Left uncut, your hair will grow to a particular length and then stop all by itself at the correct length for you. From a yogic perspective, hair is an amazing gift of nature that can actually help raise the Kundalini energy (creative life force), which increases vitality, intuition, and tranquility.

Cut Hair

Long ago people in many cultures didn’t cut their hair, because it was a part of who they were. There were no salons. Often, when people were conquered or enslaved, their hair was cut as a recognized sign of slavery. It was also understood that this would serve as punishment and decrease the power of those enslaved.

The bones in the forehead are porous and function to transmit light to the pineal gland, which affects brain activity, as well as thyroid and sexual hormones. Cutting bangs which cover the forehead impedes this process. When Genghis Khan conquered China, he considered the Chinese to be a very wise, intelligent people who would not allow themselves to be subjugated. He therefore required all women in the country to cut their hair and wear bangs, because he knew this would serve to keep them timid and more easily controlled.

As whole tribes or societies were conquered, cut hair became so prevalent that the importance of hair was lost after a few generations, and hairstyles and fashion grew to be the focus.

The science of hair was one of the first technologies given by Yogi Bhajan when he came to America.

“When the hair on your head is allowed to attain its full, mature length, then phosphorous, calcium, and vitamin D are all produced, and enter the lymphatic fluid, and eventually the spinal fluid through the two ducts on the top of the brain. This ionic change creates more efficient memory and leads to greater physical energy, improved stamina, and patience.”

Yogi Bhajan explained that if you choose to cut your hair, you not only lose this extra energy and nourishment, but your body must then provide a great amount of vital energy and nutrients to continually re-grow the missing hair.

In addition, hairs are the antennas that gather and channel the sun energy or prana to the frontal lobes, the part of the brain you use for meditation and visualization. These antennas act as conduits to bring you greater quantities of subtle, cosmic energy. It takes approximately three years from the last time your hair was cut for new antennas to form at the tips of the hair.

Kundalini Hair Care

In India, a Rishi is known as a wise one who coils his or her hair up on the crown of the head during the day to energize the brain cells, and then combs it down at night. A ‘rishi knot’ energizes your magnetic field (aura) and stimulates the pineal gland in the center of your brain.

“This activation of your pineal results in a secretion that is central to the development of higher intellectual functioning, as well as higher spiritual perception.” -Yogi Bhajan

During the day, the hair absorbs solar energy, but at night it absorbs lunar energy. Keeping the hair up during the day and down at night aids in this process. Braiding your hair at night will help your electromagnetic field balance out from the day.

Split Ends

Loose scattered hair can develop split ends. Instead of trimming them and losing your antennas, Yogi Bhajan recommends applying a small amount of almond oil to your hair overnight so that it can be absorbed before you wash it the next morning. Keeping your hair coiled on your crown and protected with a head covering during the day will help your antennas heal. If you have long hair, see if your experience is different when it is clean and coiled at your crown, or down and loose.

Wet Hair

One year after Winter Solstice, when Yogi Bhajan was sitting in our living room with wet hair, he explained that he was drying it before putting it up in order to avoid a headache. When you put your hair up wet, it will tend to shrink and tighten a bit and even break as it dries. A better idea is to occasionally take the time to sit in the sun and allow your clean, wet hair to dry naturally and absorb some extra vitamin D. Yogis recommend shampooing the hair every 72 hours (or more frequently if the scalp sweats a great deal). It can also be beneficial to wash your hair after being upset to help process emotions.

Wooden Comb

Yogis also recommend using a wooden comb or brush for combing your hair as it gives a lot of circulation and stimulation to the scalp, and the wood does not create static electricity, which causes a loss of the hair’s energy to the brain. You will find that, if you comb your hair and scalp front to back, back to front, and then to the right and left several times, it will refresh you, no matter how long your hair is. All the tiredness of your day will be gone. For women, it is said that using this technique to comb your hair twice a day can help maintain youth, a healthy menstrual cycle, and good eyesight.

If you are bald or balding, the lack of hair energy can be counteracted with more meditation. If you are finding some silver strands in your hair, be aware that the silver or white color increases the vitamins and energy flow to compensate for aging. For better brain health as you age, try to keep your hair as natural and healthy as you can.

Tagore’s Hair

Yogi Bhajan told us this story about hair many years ago at Women’s Camp in New Mexico: Recognize how beautiful and powerful your hair is—when you keep it, you live a life of fulfillment in this world. When Rabindranath Tagore, the great poet who found God within himself, tried to meet a friend on a steamer ship, the friend didn’t recognize him and so wrote him a letter. “We were on the same steamer, but I didn’t find you.” Tagore said, “I was there.” His friend said, “I understand you are now a God-realized man, and I would like to know what your first action was when you became aware of the Oneness in all.” Tagore said, “When I realized the Oneness of all, I threw my shaving kit into the ocean. I gave up my ego and surrendered to nature. I wanted to live in the form that my Creator has given me.”

When humans allow their hair to grow, they are welcoming the maturity, the responsibility of being fully-grown, and fully powerful. That is why you will find grace and calmness in a person with uncut hair from birth, if it is kept well. The Creator has a definite reason for giving you hair.

It is said that when you allow your hair to grow to its full length and coil it on the crown of the head, the sun energy, pranic life force, is drawn down the spine. To counteract that downward movement, the Kundalini life energy rises to create balance. In Yogi Bhajan’s words, “Your hair is not there by mistake. It has a definite purpose, which saints will discover and other men will laugh at.”

“Tagore said, “When I realized the Oneness of all, I threw my shaving kit into the ocean. I gave up my ego and surrendered to nature. I wanted to live in the form that my Creator has given me.””

Yes, because nothing says surrendering to nature…LIKE POLLUTING THE WATER WITH MAN-MADE CRAP!!!! What hypocrisy and pretension!

    • Terri Eather

      Well said Anonymous.

      Tagore –
Why would you pollute the ocean an possible kill marine wildlife with littering of your “Shaving kit”?

  • Christopher

but my hair is absolutely ugly when it grows! And it doesn’t look professional. There’s really nothing I can do about my hair when it grows long.. or I just dont know what to do with it.

If you think of problems you’ll have obstacles,if you think of possibilities you’ll have opportunities.
You are perfect the way you are,it’s the opinion of people which are bugging you,do not be affected by what the public says for it is YOUR LIFE and YOUR JOURNEY,be content with what you are and not what others seek in you, beauty like everything else comes from within.
Learn to love yourself fellow being,
      Peace and light to you,

I am stuck by how brightly your light shines through this discussion.
        Gratitude dear one.

  • doug girard

so, are we bald dudes satanic?

    • Rob

Only if you have horns growing out of your forehead, have a the legs of a goat, and a desire to run through the forest playing a flute with no shirt on. Then again, you could be a Democrat or Republican.

Kundalini: highway,(Ida,Pingala, & sushumna)including off-road chakras, for the Prana to travel to the top of the hill.

Spinal column: Path of the ascending Prana comprised of 33 components (the column not the Prana.)

Transubstantiation (across the substance = flesh): Flesh transforming back to state of Spirit which journey took Jesus 33 years. Prana travels over 33 spinal components. Prana attains top of skull. Golgotha, place of Jesus’ crucifixion (manifestation) means “skull” hill.

Once again the esoteric interpretation, as always, wins out.

What a joke?! What about balding hair and western monks who shaved the hair covering their crown chakra? What about Buddhist monks?

Yeah Indian yogis, they know a lot just look at the advanced state of their country.

  • Ray Bay

I stopped cutting my hair, and now I find it hard to get an IT job… It’s only a pony tail.
I also get ridiculed when I do find a contract.

    • Krishna

Ray my fellow being ,don’t forget that most people have been influenced by their environment,”culture”, so don’t be influenced/mad by/at them, but rather forgive them ,act compassionately towards them,as today’s society is a misled and blind society so understand them as their time to awaken has not yet come, but they will surely be so one day.
Don’t censor yourself because of the ignorance of others,as don’t forget that YOU HAVE WORKED to be where you are now, letting yourself get carried in the current will drag you low down again, and you’ll have to go through the pain again to reach where you are today.

So smile and enjoy the moment,as there are many routes, but we all reach The One Home finally,

(Here’s a little quote that might help you now: Silence is the best reply to a fool-someone not in the know..)
      Peace be with you brother

      • Nandi

Thank you for expressing such compassion and wisdom. It is rare and so very heartening.

  • Italics Mine

Then how should we guys interpret our receding hairline?

  • Zeddicus

@gabriel: Very good point, I concur. So in India all ‘holy’ men wear their hair long and messy and they bathe (annually or so)in a sewer river for a score of reasons. (no disrespect meant) In the article, a clear giveaway was the statement that when one cuts hair, body has to regrow it..huh?.. hair grows generally irrespective of the length. The article is a bit confused regurgitation of ignorant views and understandings on the subject. “Lack of hair energy has to be compensated with more meditation” ?? Jeesh.

    • Terminal Length

Hair does not grow irrespective of length. All hair will eventually reach a terminal length.

  • gabriel

total bs of article. Budist monks would know better, im sure.

    • Gilgamesh

      Was the Buddha bald?

  • King Dong

    What about bald dudes??

    • Anonymous

that is my question. perhaps we are satanic.

The whole top portion of the human skull/cranium on the spiritual realm is called “Sahastrara”/”Sahasrara” and here resides the “1,000 Petalled Lotus” or “Tongues of Flame” in The Bible. This area is called The Fontanale Bone Area by medical science and could be seen in infants before the bones close and harden/ossify to pulsate in sync with the physical heart. Those who are [truly and not self or another certified as being] self-realised AND have therefore experienced the Kundalini [which is not merely some hot, cold or funny sensation but an entity which one is seated upon], they too would have experienced the Sahasrara Chakra [as well as The Sahasrara], 24/7, as one experiences the eye, say – when spirituality/the-spiritual-dimension, the 4th human dimension, has been “switched-on” and is therefore innate/has become a reality as opposed to merely believing, hoping, wishing and praying-to the mesmerising Tentacle of The Bookie, Religion & Religiosity [R&R].

The Sahasrara is where the “seat”/”root-residency” of all The Chakras that are located within The Spiritual Body are sited, the latter being known as “The Tree of Life” in The Bible and “The Virat” in The Sanskrit of which The Heart Chakra is The Sahasrara Chakra. As such, The [Absolute/Real] Heart is not only above The Brain, The Absolute Heart rules/presides over The Brain. Alluding to this fact is why when The Brain dies, The Body will not necessarily die whereas when The Heart dies, The Body dies.

Another allusion is that the hair on the skull is a reflection/symtom of the state of The Sahasrara – for those who are self-realised. Hence the tale of Samson and his hair being his super strength. In addition, the hair also protects The Brain from direct/sunshine heat and those who are not Of R&R but are Of True/Absolute Religion/Authority/Morality/Self/Innateness should wear a hat on sunny days – Absolute/True Religion being innate and has NO [as in zero] association with Thoughts [Of The Past-Future] which is what R&R is all about, Innateness being Of The Present. A Simplicity which Eludes, especially those Of The [Overly Developed] Brain, those who reduce everything to thoughts and are therefore always hovering on clouds of Illusion-Delusion, ‘finking they have arrived at The Scene by just being born and having read some books thereby augmenting their R&R and ready, 25/8, for Their Final Photoshoot as they rocket off to The Stars and Stringing along Outer Space to collide with some magical God Particle, The Brain being of Width, oka Robotism, whereas The Absolute Heart is of Depth which gifts the ability not only to realise Divinity but to be truly infinite, Infinity being The View from The Finite [conceptualised] towards The Spiritual but never the other way around. Yet another Simplicity which Eludes, just like Darkness being a myth which only exists when Light is absent but never the other way around.

As Shakespeare [who is not what He seemed to be but which The Chosen Vuns are trying to replace with their own selekshion, which They always do in order to promote and institute Devolution within Humanity] had alluded-to. “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy”. The Brain will never, ever be able to “access”/breach The Heart because The Brain actually depends on The Heart – but not the other way around although the physical heart is easily mnipulated by the brain. Yet Another Simplicity which Eludes the Blind-Blinded who, in their illusory-delusory state, are magically imbued with Hindsight, Insight and Foresight much like some “Scientist” magically knows and is on his to owning everything [but realising little, if anything of absoluteness] after having read and imbibed some books and then expecting-demanding that all the science that went before his “moment of self/ego” was his to begin with, just like that [much like, say, “Amerikans” who nervously/incessantly finger-point at Zer Unsophisticated who “copied” Amerikana’s “inventions”/greatness without referring to how their science was arrived at whilst conveniently forgetting to mention how they got their “country” too]. Of course, had these scientists been all alone, they would have, individually and without any contribution from anything, including Evolution & Progress, conceptualised Zero, the nature of Nuclear Science and other little, little ‘fings which these same individuals would have easily contributed to Humanity, just like that. Especially not the Knowledge which had existed before Humanity was evolved, of course. How lucky and indebted simple humans to these geni-asses and yes, the brainards should have their Collider Funding doubled if not tripled too, praise be to them all, each and everyone of them.

If only because The Brainy have yet to realised [other than perhaps one fine day when rubble is all one could see from one’s window] that Brain Development LACKS Conscience if only because Conscience is the sole property of The True Heart [but not the material/physical heart which is only for alluding-to/channelling-towards The Real Heart], the failure of which will realise Frivolity & Nonsense like Sympathy and Lovey-Doveyness, oka being mesmerised, whereby being able to see only a localised event, oka The Middling Truth, will do just fine for expanding onto The Whole/Global much like Zer News/Propaganda, Zer Politikos und “Zer Ekonomists” which is why those who willy-nilly “give away” their heart will end up in depression/lunacy [yes Herr General und your suicidals but realise that your “agencies” will not find the answer because latent conscience, like love, is against killing another], the heart not being anyone to give away or own, Ownership Issue being the MO of Humanity, the material heart being the stepping-stone towards The Heart, oka Compassion, the One who sees everything Wholly/Globally/Universally and who is verily UnConditionality, oka Love, whereas The Brain is always Conditional, being of Expectation & Demand because Brain Development “scales” from The Past onto The Future but, magically and serendipitously, ALWAYS missing The Present, The Brain being of Relativity whereas The Absolute Heart is Of Reality. ASWE. Realise too that those who focus on Brain Development will reap not only cardiovascular afflictions, they will, on the rebound, develop nervous afflictions. Perhap zer Amerikana Uncle Tommee und hist Kabalistic Kabin Krew knows this which is why ObamyKare was developed. Such jokers should also realise that Zer Chinkos und Zer Russkies are not Amerikanas’ enemies because one’s true enemy is always from The Within. Without one single exception. One reason why Divinity principled Humanity as Duality/Dual-Natured, all behaviours being from within before it could be unleashed without – or what Grandma taught had one paid Attention which is that Charity Begins At Home, sump’fing zilllionaires have yet to realise because not being able to master counting beyond one’s toes will ensure that throwing zeroes at one’s afflictions is the only course of action, the thowing of The Mightee Dollah at The Natives to get them onto the road of Dollah Korruption.

    • lostMU

Intrigued. Hmmm. Especially by this comment. Whewww. Love it. I can imagine having a conversation for hours with a person like this, or just listening. Nice. Recently iv been interested in researching the significance of hair and its length and spiritual significance. Since I have a fear of cutting my hair and such emotional attachment to it, but lOoks like its decided to stop just above my bum, lol. Lucky me hahah.

  • chip

I let it grow for several years in the early seventies but it would not grow very long. About five years or so [who counts?} I took a friends advice and have not cut it since. I do not wash with chemicals though occasionally I may bathe it with virgin oils and scent sometimes with what tickles my fancy. I resumed the efforts I abandoned in my late twenties…to make contact with higher self…and since then [2007?] I experience daily almost constant bliss. I do not brush it or tie it or even think about it. I am freer than I ever was when I was pretending to be a hippie. Beatnik philosopher suited me far better. I am not a fad. If you meditate, if you attain yoga synthesis, you know. There is no need to change the world through social action. Simply realize Oneness and the Universe smiles within you.

    • Rob

I realized the Oneness and the IRS showed up at took 33 percent of it.

    • Nandi

I just found this article so my comment is “late” and may never be seen but…

Chip, the last line of your comment is beautiful and says it all so well. Thank you.

  • see also Isaiah 3.

….at that time there were no Khazar proselytes.

What about thinning hair, even in women? I’ve been thinking of cutting my hair because it is getting so fine and thin.

Also, what about hair on other parts of the body, such as pubic hair, and the trend of waxing that away in part of in whole? And shaving underarm and leg hair? Are these to be avoided, or does the information above only pertain to the hair on the head?

    • Riverline

      Head only..

Don’t mind what others write about body, pubic, facial hair…

Even after that, I am a bit skeptical to this hair length thingy as it’s superficial… See mongs in Tibet..

      • Krishna Viraswami

It is said monks also let go of their hair once they’ve attained the tenth level of consciousness, and also think of the Brahmans(Chanakya/tulsidas etc,) they leave only the hair in the middle of their head, they shave the rest, why?

And when you come to think of the famous sixth sense of women, doesn’t it make sense as most of them have long hair?

  • dimitri

So the current fad of men shaving all of their head hair off is TOTALLY INSANE! Nice to know.
I stopped cutting my head hair for the first time in my life a little less than three years ago. Since then my meditation has improved significantly.

What about facial hair? Shaving the beard? Trimming the beard?

    • Anonymous

facial hair is also useful, you should not cut any hair, there all intennas

      • Rob

Yea, and now if we could only figure out how to make them antennas we’d be on to something.
