How Celebrity Culture is Destroying Who We Are

Chris Renzo, Contributing Writer
Waking Times

We no longer seek community as the most important, but rather that we, the self-proclaimed celebrity, as the most important.

We live in a world that celebrates image over substance and because of this we have lost sight of who we are. We are bombarded daily with images that celebrate vanity, debauchery, and acts of senselessness. Through the corporate mass media we are subliminally told what to think, how to interpret the way society operates, what is “right,” what is “cool,” and how to keep from looking old and unhip.

Since when did Kim Kardashian, the cast of the Jersey Shore, and the endless scandals we hear in the tabloids become more important than seeking truth and meaning? Why do these headlines garner more attention than the unrelenting destruction of the Earth by the fossil fuel industry, the brutality of war all over this planet, and the overwhelming poverty found everywhere [even in America]?

Why did it become socially taboo to question events such as 9/11, the presence of american troops in the middle east, the possibility that the pillars of our society may be run by a corporate elite, or that our way of life may actually be destroying the vitality of the planet we depend on. I think it is because celebrity culture has us being afraid to step out and take a stand. Maybe celebrity culture has us so addicted to their “images” that things of meaning and substance become boring?

“The Fantasy of celebrity culture is not designed simply to entertain. It is designed to drain us emotionally, confuse us about our identity, make us blame ourselves for our predicament, condition us to chase illusions of fame and happiness, and keep us from fighting back.” – Chris Hedges

I think it is that we care so much what the “other person” may think about us that we seek to adopt a way of being, prescribed by celebrity and mass media, that makes it easy for us to “fit in.” It is the easiest way. No longer do we need to think about our existence and how we should be. We have sought image over substance. And because of this we have lost touch with ourselves. No longer do I care about how I will be received in this blog or in person. I actually think it will bring me closer to my true identity.

Modern culture rationalizes existence through the piece meal filter it is fed by major media. Do you really think that we ever hear the full story? The full story of any story is never black or white. It is complex, dynamic, and involves an array of motives and emotions that cannot be summed up by one catchy headline. If you want to know the full story shut off the television and go outside. Gather information. Talk to your neighbors. Talk with a homeless person and seek to understand their story. Seek to understand the motives of the elite and politicians. Yet also don’t forget to nurture yourself for a while and listen to the birds, listen to children laughing, and to the wind as it rustles past your ears. You can learn more from within yourself than you can from any other source.

It’s fairly unlikely that celebrity culture is a conspiracy by anybody against anybody else. It is kept going by money, and sure it doesn’t do big business any harm to have it as a distraction, but Kim Kardashian is probably not having her strings pulled by lizards, or any other corporate elite. Worth remembering too that celebrity culture is as old as humankind, it’s just more available nowadays because of the development of mass media.

The founding fathers crafted a constitution that prohibits society.

I am no intellectual to debate all of the reasons why western humanity has so radically succumbed to the torrent of ‘celebrity juice’, yet we can all agree that it is within the human condition to yearn self fulfillment and purpose, regardless of how it is sought in these so called evolved times and conscious ego phenomena.

The media are most definitely responsible for assuaging human want/need for individual recognition and why so many ordinary people get to have a stab at becoming famous if they so wish. If anything, celebrity culture reflects the modern notion of ‘individuality’ in western society – does little to oppress the birth and rise of self importance, it merely slaps it firmly on the desires and wants of the population.

Despite humanity perhaps losing touch with nature for instance and/or disenchanted with any absence of a God, as other commentators invariably believe, we are fundamentally exposed to a developed material existence in a consumer led world that cannot exist without there being a ripened sense of ‘ego’ to match. Demand and supply are at play when it comes to the ever increasing need for a celebrity presence, even though there is perhaps an awareness among individuals and groups, that consumer needs do get exploited – whoever is at fault.

Other than individual and group choice, there is also the heated debate about what constitutes a civilized society, and the ethical/moral values that govern it. Some of the most civilized cultures on our planet we could argue, are those that accept their fate in natural disaster zones and whose celebrities are the oceans – even if these deities are also capable of human swipe.

The above article is superb and illuminates the state of immediate and devastated western culture very well, despite the absence of individual and group choice, also critical to the debate if we also agree that we are a conscious and informed civilization.

  • Nice peace, but I would like to comment this:
“Why do these headlines garner more attention than the unrelenting destruction of the Earth by the fossil fuel industry, the brutality of war all over this planet, and the overwhelming poverty found everywhere [even in America]?”

What I’d like to add is why our media is not writing about the climate-industrial complex, wind power industry and other fake enviromentalism that is destroying our planet. Neo-Malthusian ideology that makes us to believe humans are the cancer of the Earth.

Have no other Gods, Before me!
Idol Worship of the TV God, indoctrination of the mind by illusions of grandeur: wanting of needless wicked things bought on Credit/Usury of 30%. Greed,Vanity,Wrath,Lust,Gluttony and Coveting by the Money God,I must have. Watching Gladiators chasing a pig skin, as American Roman Empire burns in Debt by a private Cartel of Bankers: the Federal Reserve and illegal wars of terror by Military Complex of death and greed of profits. Drone warriors marking their next victim of death.
American’ts current motto: “It doesn’t effect me, I can ignore it”.
    Ignorance is Bliss!

Cellular Entertainment Enslavement: endless bits captured on one massive mother board, The Wandering Debt Slaves of Corporatism Greed and Controlled by Farce Book: Ready to be Commanded, with “one ring to rule them all” Extinction of mortal mind & soul to the Collective Hive of the Bored: Heartless to the Core! Bowing in servitude to their “Precious”, living in a small CELL and driving weapons of mass destruction.
Home of the Debt Slaves, and the Land of the Cowardly
America is decaying economically, politically, mentally, emotionally, physically, morally and spiritually.

    Dear Chris
    Your article is spot on..

Also a lot of the Celebrity Culture was 1st Cultivated in our School years especially High School!

You Remember that when you were in School being “Captain of the Football Team””Homecoming Queen””The 4.0 GPA Genius””The Bad Boy Rebels””The Class Clown” etc. made you Celebrity

Also a lot how we were told what is “Right”and”Cool” is thru the Cliques in High School.

If you didn’t toe the line on what is”Right”and”Cool”,you weren’t allowed to be in the Clique.

Being in the Right Clique meant going to the Parties.

In Truth all High School is about,is the Celebrity Culture!!!

The Eagles had a saying in the lyrics of Hotel California:

“You can check out anytime you like, but You may never leave”

People checked out the year they graduated but they’ve never left mentally.

Once a corporation becomes a conglomerate the governments will break it up or it could control the whole world in time. This is the problem with the corporations of today. They have so much money and they need the markets to go up and down to make money on their stocks. The stock market is nothing but a pyramid scheme once it reaches it’s zenith.
When the company has raised enough money and obtained it’s goal of expansion. Then the investors should be paid and the stocks vanish. Once it tops out it’s up and down and money just changes from the ones who know the forecast for the country and the ones who have no clue. No money is made it just changes hands and it changes hands with the stock broker as middle man.
the connoditiy markets were created for companies needing raw materials and wanted to secure prices for the future. But now people who have no interest in the commodity other than to make money and these people with no interest in the commodity drive up prices. A small group of rich men could bid up the price of hasoline to $10 a gallon and cause the economy to tank. This could easily be accomplished and only if the government could prove this was their objective and impose fines and prison sentences on them, but if it was possible, then how come the government hasn’t stepped in when gas prices hit $4 a gallon?
How much profit is a gas company allowed? Exxon is making 40 billion a year now. If the government forced them to drop to $2.50 a gallon would they only profit 30 billion?

It all started right after the kosher boys created the Protocols Of Zion. They decided it was time to take control of the world. Things were becoming more modern. So they had a plan and they started with Boer Wars, Japan/Russia 1905 war So the wars are to destroy countries and take control and manipulate them. We have a foreign entity controlling the tv. The tv is the most powerful thing there is. You notice the shows they had in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Only because your parents would not allow the filth. Now anything goes. They say the F bomb on tv. Comedians the nastiest bastards there are. The entice race mixing and drugs. It is no secret who did it and why. We have lost the will to fight back. Look how they ahve disarmed the rest of the world. These militias think they can defeat the police? You’ll have everyone for themselves when SHTF and that means divide and conquer. America is finoshed unless when the jack booted thugs come to your door they are mowed down and they report back to headquarters the last house raid at 3628 Mocking Bird Lane ended in horrific failure. This now isn’t even about the commies and us. It is now about the police and us. Once again you won’t have yarmulke wearing police. The kosher boys will be safe and secure in their high rise apartnents.

If you take God out of a cuture, then people will simply make other people into their Gods instead–the Communists knew this well. A no-God culture is the precedent for Communisim.

    • Will Robinson

      Excellent take Lori

Also it was The Christian Pastors that took my God The True God the Father of Christ Jesus my Lord out of Culture.

They embraced that Damable Doctrine of”The Jews are God’s Chosen People”and”That we must support Isreal”.

I understand your heart that you want things right again.

When your Pastors forsake the Doctrine of the Faith of Christ Jesus my Lord.

It’s time to put the blame where it always should go,squarely on the backs of the Christian Pastors who betrayed my Lord Jesus Christ not the Secularists!.

Galatians 3:14 The Blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles though Jesus Christ(Where does it say thru the Jews being God’s Chosen People)

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek in Christ Jesus(Where does it say”Thru Supporting Isreal)

Galatians 3:29 Says Christ is Abraham’s Seed(Not the Jews)

Remember Lord Jesus Christ saying his kingdom is not of this world in John 18:36.
So that so called nation of Israel in the Middle-East is a Lie.

Since in 1 John 4:4 God is greater that the Devil,it can only mean one thing.

It was the Christian Pastors who truley took God out of culture not the Secularists!!!

“Precedent” to Communism? We already have Communism. That’s what Obamacare is. That’s what our Republicrat one party system has insured. That’s what the dumbed down majority has been cowed into accepting. By not resisting and by thus granting consent we become collaborators, like it or not. – Time to rethink every thought you have and every move you make.

  • gregorylent

the symptom and the disease are one thing, and that is not addressed here.

    • I think it goes back to our detachment from nature and the narcissism that has run rampant in our culture. Our void from nature, being cast into these states of vulnerability, has us clinging to our egos in attempts to placate this banishment from the divine state. The corporation and its partner the media perpetuate this illusion through consumer culture and keep alive the biggest destructive force [the rape and pillage of our Earth]. By keeping us distracted from the real issue through addiction to our vanity we become numb. This post can be turned into a book. We need to take it page by page.

        That is the truth Chris…100%!!!!!!
