Have you heard of guerrilla gardening? If not, it’s time to get familiar with the term. All around the world, activists are planting everything from wildflowers to hers to fruits and vegetables in public spaces.

Often perceived to be an act of civil disobedience, guerrilla gardening, at its very basis, aims to beautify cities and reduce food shortages. For instance, in some places that are rife with homelessness and poverty, edible plants are planted in urban areas to increase people’s access to nutritious foods.

  • In other instances, “seed bombs” are sometimes thrown to create oases of indigenous wildflowers. Not only do the flowers create oceans of colorful life in otherwise drab and unused lots, but they also help to nourish dwindling pollinator species, like the honeybee.

There are many reasons to be a guerrilla gardener. If you have questions about the process or how to get started, take a peek at the infographic designed by the Guerrilla Gardening Movement. As Inhabitat reports, the guide offers some great tips on how to start.
