Champion MMA Fighter Comes Out Swinging for Cannabis and CBD as Alternative to Destructive Opioids

Few are as familiar with pain as professional mixed martial arts fighters. It’s a brutal blood sport which taxes the body severely in the rigorous training it takes to become a winner, and fighters can suffer serious injuries during bouts. Bas Rutten is a former world champion turned celebrity announcer, trainer and now advocate of cannabis and cannabidiol (CBD) oil as an alternative to destructive opioids for pain management.

In a recent article, Bas tells the story of heavyweight fighter Mark Kerr who became addicted to opioids in order to endure the pain of fighting, ultimately wrecking his body, life and career.

“It was hard to watch Mark Kerr fall, but he should be proud of the fact that he came clean because I am certain it DID affect some people and those folks learned not to fall into the trap of using painkillers themselves.” ~Bas Rutten

  • Bas himself even developed an addiction to opioids at one point in his career, but was able to kick them after some time, ultimately discovering the benefits of CBD oil, which he now uses regularly.

“As for my own experience with CBD, it saved me a lot of trouble after I realized that I had a painkiller problem that started after my last fight in 2006. About five weeks before the fight, all my injuries came back with a vengeance. It starts with one pill, then it becomes two, four, seven, ten, and slowly but surely, you are upping the count, and before you know it, you’re taking insane amounts of painkillers.

So, my doctor told me that there is a lot of Tylenol in Vicodin, even some in Norco, and that would be bad for my liver since I take so many. My doctor told me, “it’s better you go to oxycontin.” I did, and boy that stuff is horrible. Sure you feel good, but it doesn’t help with the pain after a while, and you just take it because you are hooked.

Thankfully, I came to that realization pretty quickly and took care of it. It wasn’t as easy as I am communicating to you right now, but that story is for another time. What I want to say is that if there would have been CBD at that time, I might have not become addicted to painkillers. I really hope that all fighters and other athletes will use CBD instead of painkillers.” ~Bas Rutten

Bas also understands the depth of the national opioid crisis and just how profitable this is for the medical industry, and he’s using his forum to promote a healthy alternative to painkillers, which is important for people to know before they experience an accident or something which causes severe, chronic pain, as it can take as little as a week of regular use for someone to develop a long-term addiction to opioids.

“Painkillers are the drugs that the country wants to sell to you. They don’t want you to buy weed because they want you to buy their drugs. Alcohol is good at dulling pain as well, yet in 2010, its misuse cost the United States $249-billion. That’s a lot of money.

About 88,000 people die here in the States due to alcohol-related incidents like car accidents, shootings, etc. That is, if I do my math correctly, about 240 deaths a day, 10 an hour—that’s a death every six minutes. Painkiller overdoses equate to 46 deaths a day, and that’s not including what junkies do—kill, rob and beat up innocent people for drug money.” ~Bas Rutten

    Final Thoughts

And Bas is right. In states where cannabis is legal, opioid use is plummeting. Senior citizens are now the fastest growing demographic of cannabis users, choosing to ditch dizzying pharmaceuticals for pain and other health conditions associated with aging. And numerous medical studies are confirming CBD’s efficacy as a painkiller.

Bas Rutten is an inspiration and an example for many, and he speaks with authority on how the miracle of CBD to treat pain. When he speaks, people listen, therefore it’s admirable that he’s taking a strong position in favor of cannabis as a natural and effective medicine.

“So now, with , one can no longer deny the painkilling effects that scientists found in numerous studies. The movement cannot be stopped now.” ~Bas Rutten
