Most of us who live in the United States have always assumed that our food would be available in abundance at our commercial grocery stores at affordable prices, at least for the past three generations. Most have never spent a thought about what they would do if their basic weekly food staples became unavailable and/or priced out of affordability to all except those in the upper class of our society.

Back in the early 1900’s, 44% of the country were farmers and 22% of our net income was spent to put food on the table. Today less than 2% of the jobs in this country involve farming and 7% of middle class income on average is spent on food. This is in large part due to the just-in-time industrial globalization of food supply, large food subsidies to Big Ag doled out by our government, and the creation of synthetically modified “foodstuff” through biotechnology since 1966.

A Perfect Storm is upon us this spring 2014 in California and well beyond.

The gale force storm is likely to blow serious price changes to the price and availability of our basic foods through the months and years ahead due to several different factors that affect food costs and availability, or as called in business ,“structural prices change”. This March of 2014 has seen the largest increase in beef and veal prices since 2003, while milk prices globally are hitting all-time record highs. According to the U.S. Labor Department, since the end of 2013, lean hog prices have risen 42.5%, oats 29%, cocoa 11.8%, wheat 11.9%, cattle meat 11.4% and raw sugar 3.9%.

As what happens in many a crises, it is not usually one catastrophic event that causes great disruptions and significant abrupt change in lifestyles, but many times seemingly random unrelated events occurring simultaneously or in quick succession, which can cause great upheaval and long-term deviation from previous periods of seemingly long-term normalcy.

Additionally, weather-wise, history shows us that there are long periods of constant and consistent “Goldie Locks” planetary environments which have been followed by sudden, abrupt rapid climate changes. We appear to now be one of those times as the Eastern half of the U.S. endures an endless winter while Californian records historical drought conditions, yet to our immediate North, Oregon has recorded record cold snows this past winter. Globally, it is much the same story.  Europe is being blasted this winter with massive winds and storms while Alaska reports 40 degree above normal temps and Australia has to reset their color coded weather warnings to accommodate never before seen temperatures that reached 130 degrees this summer.

California officials who manage the State Water Project announced in early March that they won’t be releasing any water for farmers, marking a first in its 54-year history.

Farmers are hit hardest, but they’re not alone. Contractors that provide cities with water can expect to receive half of their usual amount, the Bureau said, and wildlife refuges that need water flows in rivers to protect endangered fish will receive 40 percent of their contracted supply.

3300 water contractors that provide farmers with water and hold historic agreements giving them senior rights will receive 40 percent of their normal supplies. Some contracts date back over a century and guarantee that farmers will receive at least 75 percent of their water.

One of those is the San Joaquin River Exchange Contractors Water Authority in Los Banos that provides irrigation for 240,000 acres of farmland. The Water Authority’s executive director Steve Chedester said farmers he serves understand that the reality of California’s drought means it’s going to be tough to find enough water for them. “They’re taking a very practical approach,” he said. “If it’s not there, it’s just not there.”

For the State of California, most in the state are critically dependent on what water comes off the Sierra and as noted above there will not be very much water to allocate.

The snowpack – often called California’s largest reservoir – normally provides about a third of the water used by cities and farms as it melts into streams and reservoirs in spring and early summer.

California’s major reservoirs, mostly bereft of both snow and rain this winter as the drought pushes through its third year, are dangerously low. Lake Oroville in Butte County, the State Water Project’s (SWP) principal reservoir, is at only 39 percent of its 3.5 million acre-foot capacity (57 percent of its historical average for the date). Shasta Lake north of Redding, California’s and the federal Central Valley Project’s (CVP) largest reservoir, is at 38 percent of its 4.5 million acre-foot capacity capacity (52 percent of its historical average). San Luis Reservoir, a critical south-of-Delta reservoir for both the SWP and CVP, is at a mere 33 percent of its 2 million acre-foot capacity (39 percent of average for this time of year).

With no end to the drought in sight, DWR on January 31 set its allocation of State Water Project water at zero. The only previous zero percent allocation (water delivery estimate) was for agriculture in the drought year of 1991, but cities that year received 30 percent of requested amounts. This is the first time the allocation has been set at zero across the board. (Source)

”The CA state has promised 5-1/2 times more water rights than the water that actually exists,” said Carolee Krieger, Executive Director of the California Water Impact Network (C-WIN), a member organization of the Environmental Water Caucus.

In reaction, California legislature is fast tracking plans to raise Shasta dam some 18.5 feet. Shasta dam is the largest holder of water for California and raising the water line would further wipe out the last original Winnemen Wintu Indians who were moved off their sacred lands when the original dam was built in 1945. (Source)

Also being fast tracked is another massive dam that would be the 7th largest in the state to be located just above Sacramento and East of Mendocino County called “Sites” that would take water from Shasta dam. The new dam would cost an estimated $2-4 Billion from over-taxed citizens of California. Congress is illegally being bypassed for the first time in not being allowed to vote on the proposed dam as required by law.  Not so coincidentally, CA Senators Boxer and Feinstein proposed $300 million drought relief funding that would give the Feds more authority to direct California’s water from Shasta dam to the new dam and to the Big Oil frackers down in Central Valley. (source)

California’s agricultural abundance includes more than 400 commodities. The state produces nearly half of US-grown fruits, nuts and vegetables. The state’s 80,500 farms and ranches received a record $44.7 billion for their output last year, up from $43.3 billion in 2011 and $37.9 billion during 2010.

California’s top-ten valued commodities are:

• Milk — $6.9 billion
• Grapes — $4.449 billion
• Almonds — $4.347 billion
• Nursery plants — $3.543 billion
• Cattle, Calves — $3.299 billion
• Strawberries — $1.939 billion
• Lettuce — $1.448 billion
• Walnuts — $1.349 billion
• Hay — $1.237 billion
• Tomatoes — $1.170 billion

Exports totaled $18.18 billion in value which represents an 8% increase over the previous year. Three-fourths of California’s water is used on crops and about 15 percent of those crops are grown for export. As a California water blogger puts it, “If we are growing 750,000 acres of nuts for the rest of the world, then we’re shipping 2.25 [million acre-feet]/year of water away in the form of a pleasant snack at the direct expense of people here in the state.”

New figures show U.S. wine exports grew for the third consecutive year in 2012, setting a record of $1.43 billion in revenue, according to the San Francisco-based Wine Institute. Ninety percent of those exports were from California. Volume shipments reached 424.6 million liters or 112.2 million cases. The European Union remained the top market for California wines, accounting for about 34 percent of all sales. The state’s wineries also saw significant growth in Canada and Asia. Sales in China reached $74 million in 2012, up 18 percent from the previous year. South Korea, at $16 million, was up 26 percent. And Vietnam, at $27 million, was up 22 percent.

“My gross sales are probably going to be cut in half,” said Bill Diedrich, who farms 1,500 acres of almonds, tomatoes and other crops in the parched Central Valley community of Firebaugh. “Some farmers out here are going to lose everything they’ve got.” Jim Cochran of Swanton Berry Farm in Davenport, CA. offers a hint of what may come. He stopped watering his artichokes a month ago and expects the cost of a pint of organic strawberries, which usually sell for $3.50 at Bay Area farmers markets, to go up roughly 20 percent to at least $4.20 a pint.

“We’re really concerned about the extent to which acreage is being taken out of action,” said Richard Volpe, an economist in the Foods Markets Branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “The real economic impact is long-term and will be felt down the road, when there will be a structural shift in prices.”

Farmers are not the only business’ that will be affected. Construction contractors and other water intensive business’ are told to expect to receive half of their usual amount, according to the State Farm Bureau. This is coming at a time when home sales for February recorded its lowest levels on record since 2008. Wildlife refuges that need water flows in rivers to protect endangered fish will receive just 40% of normal allocations of their contracted supplies.

Last month, the largest slaughterhouse in the North Bay, Rancho Feed of Petaluma was shuttered and a week later went out of business altogether due to the USDA recall of nearly 9 million pounds of “diseased and unsound” beef.

Caught up in the USDA big freeze of meat suppliers in our area are many of the high end meat suppliers including Niman Ranch that used the Ranch Feed slaughter facilities. Bill Niman has 40,000 pounds of grass-fed beef in freezers over in Richmond that the USDA has refused to allow released for sale for over 6 weeks now. Mr. Niman has said that if he is not allowed to sell this beef to customers he and other grass-fed ranchers will go out of business for good.

At this same time, a highly contagious pig virus known as “Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus”, has now spread to 27 different U.S. states, and it has killed more than 4 million hogs since last May. Smithfield Foods, the largest pork producer in the entire world, estimates that approximately 10 percent of all adult female hogs in America have contracted the disease already, and there is a very good chance that any offspring that they have will die. That is because the mortality rate for this disease for piglets is between 80 and 100 percent. Fortunately, we are being told that this disease does not affect humans.

Additionally, due to our historic drought in California, availability of alfalfa and hay to feed their livestock is getting harder to find and increasingly more expensive for cattle and sheep ranchers. Jamie Williamson, of Williamson Hay Supply of Redwood Valley, who provides much of the feed for livestock in Mendocino, is frustrated due to lack of available supply: “I have standing orders I cannot fill right now” he said this week. “This is the time when we are supposed to have abundant supply at lower prices for the ranchers but I just can’t find any. I called up to Oregon to make a run and they told me not to bother because they are tapped out as well.”

When I asked him what he thought prices might be this winter he replied, “If, and this is a big if, if you can find any this winter, you are looking at a doubling of prices, easy.” As the drought continues many ranchers are culling their herds to reduce costs and future expense. Some local valley ranchers in Anderson Valley have cut back their herds by half this year. This has kept some local inventory beef supply and prices in relative check, once that supply is used up, beef prices will rise accordingly.

Last October a “freak flash freeze” hit South Dakota killing 100,000 cattle. Between January 2011 and January 2013 Texas lost 15 percent of its cattle — or about 2 million animals – to drought. That helped the size of the U.S. herd drop to 89.3 million head, the lowest level since the 1950s.

The closing of the North Bay’s largest slaughterhouse on February 7th of this year by the USDA is suspect as to its timing and impact of our local beef supply. Even as the USDA continues on with its investigations, a small high-end beef buyer has been allowed to buyout Rancho Feed operations even though the USDA has not declared the exact cause of the recall and has three ongoing investigations, including one criminal investigation.

Initially, the USDA recalled 40,000 of beef from Rancho Feed on January 13, 2014 because the meat did not receive a “full inspection”. Three weeks later the big hammer came down and 8.7 million pounds of beef was recalled that came from this one meat processing plant due to “diseased and unsound animals”, according to the USDA. A week after the largest recall in U.S. history of beef, the USDA announced that the recall would affect 80 food distributors throughout the country and would go back for an entire year.

Rancho Feed was the only USDA-inspected animal processing facility in Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Lake and Mendocino counties, with the exception of a small plant for sheep and goats near Occidental.

Just a few days after the recall, the USDA announced that the recall would go back for an entire year and include many top Big Food providers. Company brands like Nestle’s Philly Steak, Cheese and Croissant Crust Philly Steak and Cheese Hot Pockets, Walmart Fatburgers, Kroger Ground Beef Mini Sliders and other well-known brands were also cast in the USDA dragnet.

How the USDA plans to recall beef that had been already been sold and consumed over the past year is unclear, yet they insist that no cases of illness from the unsound beef has been reported.

Bill Niman, of Niman Ranch, and one of the longest suppliers of local traditional beef, has been dumfounded by the recall.

From the Santa Rosa Press Democrat (2.23.14), “Marin County beef producer Bill Niman goes to extreme lengths to track his animals from birth to slaughter. He’s hoping his records will prove his beef is safe and convince federal regulators to reverse a decision that will force him to destroy at least $300,000 worth of frozen meat caught up in the Rancho Feeding Corporation recall.

Niman and his wife Nicolette Hahn Niman are among a small group of upscale North Bay ranchers who have been ordered to surrender all beef processed last year at the Petaluma slaughterhouse. “We’re the ones taking a big hit on this,” said Niman, 69, who also founded Niman Ranch in the early 1970s and is widely considered one of the early leaders in humane and sustainable meat production.

The financial damage to North Bay ranchers — many of them raising high-end, grass-fed beef — makes the Rancho case rare among meat recalls, experts said. And to date no one has revealed such potentially huge losses as the Nyman’s. The couple said the losses may put them out of business.

They have asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to review documents showing that BN managers or Niman himself were at Rancho with USDA inspectors every time their animals were killed and processed. “We not only know the inspectors were there,” said Nicolette Hahn Niman. ‘We were there ourselves.’”

Only a few days after Rancho Petaluma announced it was closing for good, Marin Sun Farms, a small local high-end grass-fed beef grower had stepped in and bought the processing plant in a slick fast escrow close. The USDA apparently gave their blessing to the buyout even though, at the same exact time, they were adding a criminal investigation to the two investigations already underway.

Why anyone would buy a “diseased and unsound” business while government investigations are continuing is unclear unless they know more than has been disclosed to the public.

Marin Sun Farms is a 3rd generation grass-fed operation with 22 employees according to their website. Yet a deeper story lies as to who came in so quickly to back Dave Evans, CEO of Marin Sun Farms, on the down and dirty purchase of the slaughterhouse providing critical millions of dollars in cash to help with the purchase of Rancho Feed.

According the SF Biz Journal, Mr. Evans was able to quickly gather one of the biggest names in Silicon Valley to help in the buyout, Mr. Ali Partovi. Mr. Partovi was a large Angel investor in the early days of private Facebook as well as other very profitable start-ups. He also co-founded Code.org, a technology software company working with Google, Apple and Bill Gates Foundation to bring the technology based Common Core programs to all public schools.

Only after significant pressure from the local grass-fed beef ranchers who are caught up in the recall, the USDA announced on March 7th that some of the beef was tainted due to “cattle infected with eye cancer”. “Rancho was allegedly buying up cows with eye cancer, chopping off their heads so inspectors couldn’t detect the disease and illegally selling the meat, the sources said.” The tipster said that the illicit slaughter was happening after-hours, and that the carcasses, which showed no signs of cancer or ill-health, were able to pass as good beef and were sold under the Rancho label.”  (SF Chronicle, 3.8.14)

How USDA inspectors for over a year could not detect the eye cancer, which grows on their outside eyelids, was undisclosed due to their “ongoing investigations”.

Aiding and abetting The Perfect Storm, it turns out that the USDA realigned its meat inspection program due to cost cutting just six months ago. The USDA introduced a new self-regulation program, called HIMP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point-Based Inspection Models Project). HIMP plans to eliminate 800 federal meat inspectors and is already in operation at about 25 chicken and turkey plants. It likely played a role in the Rancho Feeding Corp. recall said Stan Painter, president of the National Joint Council of Food Inspection Locals, which represents 6,000 inspectors nationwide. “In many places, managers and veterinarians are being asked to help with inspections,” because of a shortage of federal inspectors, he said.

Bottom line for Bill Niman is that he is likely out of business as the USDA announced this week that the three ongoing investigations were going to take a very long time. Officials said it was unlikely that he and the other grass fed beef ranchers would see their inventory released from the massive recall as USDA set a very high bar to clear anyone from the blanket dragnet.

Those cattle ranchers that cannot use Marin Sun Farms processing plant will now be forced to travel great distances to slaughterhouses in Eureka or the Central Valley. This, combined with our critical water shortage and feed costs, will put many out of business for good, causing beef prices to soar and a steep decline in local grass fed beef suppliers for North Counties and beyond.

Adding salt to the growing deep wounds of our critical food issues is the first time ever cuts to SNAP, also known as the nation’s food stamp program. Beginning this year food stamp funding is being cut by some $4.5 billion dollars with another $12 billion in cuts planned in following years.

Little known is that this $4.5 billion cut was set in motion back in 2012 when Michelle Obama announced her “Healthy Food for Schools” program. Since Congress refused to allocate funds to her new program her husband made a deal with a compliant Congress to use SNAP food stamp program money to pay for her “Let’s Move” campaign beginning in 2014. (Source)

Kathy Jackson, CEO of the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, which distributes 52 million pounds of food each year to low-income California residents, says the drought could prove devastating to the food bank’s users. That’s because 27 million pounds of the food her organization hands out annually are fruits and vegetables donated by California farms and growers.

As we move deeper into this Perfect Storm it needs to be noted that our President and elected officials can find tens of billions of dollars from us taxpayers to support regime changes in Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and now Ukraine but only millions to help the starving farmers of California which feed our families.

It also needs to be made clear that the Governor of California, Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown has refused to cut back water to fracking operations in the state at the direct expense of our states farmers and ranchers resulting in feeding our cars over our people.

To those who don’t think food shortages and rationing could ever become reality in the U.S all we have to do is look at what is happening in Venezuela. Just last week Venezuela introduced food rationing that limits grocery purchases to limits of just one day per week with limited amounts of food purchases and an automatic electronic halt to any excess purchases of basic foods. Next week they plan to initiate a national food ID card. The food shortages in Venezuela are being caused by their countrymen selling food to neighbor Columbia, whose food prices are 10 times higher causing shortages, though a similar Food ID system could very well be implemented in this country by the end of summer due to supply shortages due to California’s historical drought, weather weirding throughout the planet and untimely USDA meat recalls causing many cattle ranchers out of business permanently. (Source)

Local farmers and ranchers may become our critical food supplier in the months and years ahead if drought conditions continue through next year and beyond as our collective “new normal”. Supporting our local foodshed infrastructure of farmers, ranchers and local food stores has never been more critical now. All that can grow food for themselves, for others, and to support our local food banks and soup kitchens is imperative.

If the Perfect Storm is our new normal we must all once again get down on our knees, like our forefathers and mothers before us, and plant a seed to feed our own. Maybe then we will begin once again to value and cherish our sacred Mother and not just treat her as a never-ending supply house and sewer.

Maybe our children will once again learn then how to grow their own and live in self-reliance and self-sufficiency without need or want of outside government agencies and learn to respect Earths Laws and Natures Ways as stated by our Founding Fathers in their very first document they signed when they broke away from the previous tyrannical oppressive government of their time:

Neuroscience has come under scrutiny for its involvement in an array of mind control initiatives and other ethically questionable research. But at least one neuroscientist from Sweden has gone on record to caution against the increasing dangers of Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) on human beings and other living organisms, as you will see in the presentation below.

Our modern world is creating an electromagnetic soup filled with electrical pulses, radio frequencies, computer screens, wireless signals, as well as personal devices such as cell phones and gadgets that are emitting damaging radiation. There are many peer-reviewed scientific studieswhich are drawing conclusions that should concern us all, but particularly young children and pregnant women. In fact, the debate is heating up to such a level that government agencies are even infighting over the matter, as evidenced when the Department of the Interior recently sent a letter with their own scientific papers chastising the FCC for using standards that are 30 years out of date. As the DOI stated, the concern is not only in the negative health effects upon people, but upon wildlife as well.

Please listen to Professor Olle Johansson, PhD as he offers a comprehensive view of the many issues surrounding EMFs, including an industry-wide attempt by telecom to cover up the negative consequences. His information is echoed by the recent reversal of a ruling in Maine which had everything to do with industry pressure and influence. Professor Johansson also addresses what we can do to protect ourselves and our environment from the impact of EMFs.

Dr. Johansson is Associate Professor in the Neuroscience department of the world-renowned Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. This presentation was filmed at a technical seminar on the Environment and Health in Barcelona, Spain. It is a key presentation, as he is speaking to medical practitioners, not only to a lay audience. Nevertheless, it’s a very straightforward and easily understood lecture.

Particularly troubling is his opening sequence which recounts the long history of known negative health effects.

He also asserts that all people are hypersensitive to EMFs and are being radiated in the classical way that we would think of as related to major events such as Fukushima. The health effects are long term – including DNA fragmentation – and also must be addressed as a cumulative threat.

At the very least, Professor Johansson asserts, EMFs very easily can be linked to a growing number of allergies, and he urges us to re-evaluate the rise in allergic conditions in tandem with the rise in the use of electronic devices.

Please share this information and help your friends and family make better informed decisions in a world of increased connectivity. Professor Johansson is no Luddite, but a concerned scientist who would like to see a full open debate based on the very troubling scientific health studies he cites.

Purifying water can be expensive and cumbersome in many countries, and without access to clean water or sanitation, disease runs rampant, and many people die unnecessarily from water-borne illness. Fortunately, due to the collaboration of the University of Botswana and researchers from Uppsala University, a natural and inexpensive way to purify water has been uncovered - Moringa oleifera.

Utilizing extracts from the Moringa oleifera tree, scientists were able to remove impurities from water without using aluminum or iron salts (both substances can have damaging effects on the human body, especially aluminum).

“It’s amazing to see that simple interactions between molecules can solve practical problems. Understanding this process can lead to further developments in water purification using naturally occurring and environmentally friendly materials,” says Adrian Rennie, Professor of Neutron Scattering at Uppsala University.

Normally, water is purified with aluminum of iron salts. This is especially so in underdeveloped countries like Africa and Asia. Instead of using these chemical contaminants, water can be purified easily and inexpensively with Moringa. You can watch a video to see the plant seeds in action, here.

A study shows how extremely small amounts of protein from the seeds of the tree bind strongly to surfaces, a property that results in the aggregation of pollutant particles, which can then be separated from the water. This discovery grew out of a collaboration with the University of Botswana and scientists at The Scattering Center and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Ångström Laboratory.

Following are instructions on how to purify water with Moringa oleifera seed pods:

  • 1. Collect only mature Moringa seed pods and remove the seed from its casing.
  • 2. Discard the shell casings (seed coat) and put aside.
  • 3. Determine the number of seed kernels you will need based on the turbidity and volume of water to be purified. In general, 1 seed kernel will treat a liter of water. Water with high turbidity (dirt and microorganisms) needs more seeds.
  • 4. Crush the seed kernels (using a grinder hammer, mortar and pestle, etc.) This should result in a fine powder that you can sift through mesh or a screen.
  • 5. Mix the seed powder with clean water to form a paste.
  • 6. Mix the paste and about 1 cup of the clean water in a bottle and shake to make a solution.
  • 7. Filter this into water to be cleaned with fine muslin cloth or mesh screen. (This will also help to remove larger unwanted particles from the water).
  • 8. Stir the water rapidly for about 1 minute then slowly for approximately 10 minutes.
  • 9. Let the water sit undisturbed for 1-2 hours minimum. Longer is fine.
  • 10. Carefully pour clean water from the top – the contaminates will have settled to the bottom.
  • 11. This clean water can then be filtered or sterilized for use in cooking or drinking.

Please note: (Moringa does not remove all water pathogens, just a large percentage).

Public awareness of the risks and dangers of hydraulic gas-fracturing, or Fracking, is growing daily, but not nearly as fast as the practice itself is. Across the world, fracking is creating a massive new energy boom and investors are pouring money into energy companies who are setting up frack wells faster than the public can even figure out what’s happening.

Fracking causes significant environmental damage, yet the industry, of course, touts it as safe, saying that the stated risks are either unproven or circumstantial. In some cases industry is even suing detractors and people directly impacted by fracking for slander. Because of the denial and obfuscation of truth surrounding the impacts of fracking, a sort of cognitive dissonance has emerged, with many people willing to dismiss all of the noted side effects as unrelated, on the grounds that no singular authoritative scientific body has publicly declared fracking to be dangerous, and that the oil and gas industry has not yet admitted fault.

The impacts of fracking, from earthquakes to environmental pollution to increases in cancer, are well documented on many websites and in many publications, by scholarly researchers, scientists and government agencies, by anecdotal stories, documentary films, and home videos. If you want to believe that fracking is a safe and smart way of managing the earth and our resources then you really have to suspend disbelief in the face of an ever-growing body of evidence and complaints.

One of the most outrageous and unbelievable effects of fracking in some areas is the phenomenon of tap water becoming flammable, straight from the tap, due to methane and other gasses leaching into ground wells and water supplies. Watching a faucet set on fire and hearing the stories of the people involved is not something that can be too readily dismissed, and here are a 5 examples of this:

1. Steve Lipsky of Weatherford, Texas, is facing a defamation lawsuit from the oil and gas industry after he has publicly decried fracking as the source of the contamination of his water, which is now flammable. The city has told him this water is safe to drink. From RT.com:

2.Shelly Perdue lives less then a half a mile from Steven Lipsky in Weatherford Texas. The water from her well, like his, is also flammable, and her home has methane gas in the air when she runs her water. Footage from Julie Dermansky.

3. In Granville Township, Pennsylvania, home of Chesapeake Energy’s massive fracking operations, homeowners are able to light their tap water on fire and their homes routinely smell like methane.

4. From the documentary film, Gasland, Dimock, Pennsylvania residents demonstrate just how flammable their tap water has become since fracking emerged.

5. In Parker County, Texas, residents are seen setting aflame a vent hose set up by the water well company to vent the methane gas coming from a contaminated water well. This is a demonstration of just how much methane is now combined with water resources in this area.

Conclusion

All of these cases share the common thread of nearby fracking operations. If the water is flammable, one has to wonder how this affects human, animal and plant life in the area, as cancer and other chronic illnesses continue to rise in the US. For homeowners and residents suffering from the negative impacts of fracking, the Environmental Protection Agency has been of little help.

The public’s appreciation of the toxicity of glyphosate—the active ingredient in Monsanto’s broad-spectrum herbicide Roundup—is still limited, despite highly damning research being published.

The fact that Monsanto marketed Roundup as “environmentally friendly” and “biodegradable” probably has a lot to do with this general lack of insight.

More people are apt to remember the Roundup commercial than recall the fact that Monsanto was twice found guilty of false advertising of this herbicide. In 2009, a French court again upheld these earlier convictions.

Mounting evidence shows that glyphosate is FAR more toxic than anyone previously suspected, both alone and in combination with other additives (as in the case of Roundup), or in combination with other agricultural chemicals and/or heavy metals.

Dr. Donald Huber, one of the premier plant pathologists in the US, views it far more toxic than DDT. They are spraying nearly ONE BILLION pounds every year on our food crops. That is enough glyphosate to fill 4,000 Olympic sized swimming pools.

Most recently, what’s being referred to as “an epidemic” of chronic kidney disease—a mysterious form of toxic nephropathy—striking down farmers in Sri Lanka, India, and Central America’s Pacific coastline (El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica), has now been traced back to Roundup in combination with contaminated fertilizer.

As reported by Lanka Business Online1“Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) first appeared in Sri Lanka’s rice growing areas in the north central province in the 1990s and has been spreading into other areas including the South, with over 20,000 estimated deaths so far.” According to estimates by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some 20,000 American farm workers are also being poisoned on the job each year2.

Lethal Kidney Disease Linked to Roundup and Phosphate Fertilizer Combo

According to a recent study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health,3 glyphosate may carry heavy metals and minerals, whether naturally-occurring or originating from agricultural chemicals, into your kidneys, courtesy of its chelating properties.

A unique feature of this kidney disease (chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology/CKDu) is that none of the commonly known risk factors apply, such as diabetes or hypertension, but there’s a strong association between this mysterious kidney disease and consumption of hard water, i.e. water that contains higher amounts of calcium, magnesium, strontium, and iron.

Ninety-six percent of patients with chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology had consumed hard or very hard water for at least five years. Meanwhile, the disease is not found among those who get their drinking water straight from natural springs. Kidney toxicity is not known to be associated with hard water consumption, and this surprising finding added to the initial mystery. Furthermore, the disease seemed to have cropped out of nowhere. There were no reported cases of this kind of kidney disease in Sri Lanka prior to the 1990s.

The researchers note that the original use of glyphosate was as a de-scaling agent, used to clean out calcium and other mineral deposits in hot water systems. De-scaling agents attach to minerals such as calcium and magnesium, rendering them water soluble. According to the authors:

“[T]he totality of scientific evidence gathered so far has highlighted the fact that an unknown factor (Compound X) originating from agrochemicals, when combined with hardness/Ca/Mg can cause significant kidney damage; thus explaining many current observations including the unique geographical distribution of the disease.

If we assume that the ‘Compound X’ is derived from the agrochemicals and is easily bound to Ca/Mg/Sr/Fe to ultimately cause damage to the kidneys, then this hypothesis can explain the geographical distribution of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) as well as the occurrence of the disease only after the 1990s…

Although glyphosate alone does not cause an epidemic of chronic kidney disease, it seems to have acquired the ability to destroy the renal tissues of thousands of farmers when it forms complexes with a localized geo-environmental factor (hardness) and nephrotoxic metals.”

A ‘Perfect Storm’ of Environmental Factors and Chemical Contamination

Arsenic also plays a role. Previous research has shown victims of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology have arsenic in their hair and nails, and arsenic along with heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, nickel, and lead are also found in the triple-super-phosphate (TSP) fertilizer used by Sri Lankan farmers.

Triple superphosphate4 (TSP), also known as calcium dihydrogen phosphate and as monocalcium phosphate, became widely used in the 20th cen­tury. In Sri Lanka, it’s applied within a couple of weeks of spraying the rice fields with glyphosate.

According to the featured study, Sri Lankan farmers do not use protective gear when applying agricultural chemicals, which would explain why glyphosate has been found in farmers’ urine post-application. The matter may be further compounded by the fact that:

  • The affected farmers dissolve the glyphosate in hard water before spraying
  • They eat rice contaminated with glyphosate and heavy metals
  • Many chew locally grown tobacco, which has also been found to be contaminated with cadmium and arsenic

“The phosphorus atom in the phosphonic group in the glyphosate/AMPA molecule can possibly be replaced by As (Arsenic). Following dermal and respiratory absorption of glyphosate, it can form complexes with nephrotoxic metals and arsenic derived from rice, vegetables and tobacco within the circulation,” the researchers say.

Chemical Agriculture Has Replaced Sustainable Agriculture Around the Globe

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology has also become commonplace among Central American sugarcane farmers. The two crops, rice and sugarcane, both require higher amounts of agricultural chemicals when grown on a large scale, and glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide in areas affected by this chronic kidney disease.

Shockingly, considering its majestic natural beauty, the island country of Sri Lanka has some of the highest use of agricultural chemicals in the world! According to the featured article:5

“The Island newspaper… quoted WHO/UN data which said Sri Lanka used 471 units of agro-chemicals, the highest in the world, made up of 187 Units of pesticides, which was also the highest in the world and 284 units of fertilizer, which was the 8th highest in the world.

Others were; Bangladesh (431U), Jamaica (397U), Dominican Republic (358U), Costa Rica (357U) and El Salvador (355U)… The state also subsidizes chemical fertilizer in an unprecedented scale.”

The Many Health Hazards of Glyphosate

It seems quite clear that we’ve radically altered our farming methods, embracing the “marvels” of chemical agriculture, without having a clear understanding of what all of these products actually do, alone and in combination, beyond their obvious benefits of killing pests. It appears as though, long-term, certain chemicals such as glyphosate also have the ability to kill the human population, along with other portions of the natural world.

Glyphosate is actually, in many ways, similar to DDT, which is now known to cause reproductive problems and birth defects6among other things. The most recent research into DDT effects found that exposure appears to increase the risk of developingAlzheimer’s disease, decades later.

This is undoubtedly unwelcome news to those who, in their youth, used to run out and frolic in the fumes from the DDT truck! Remember, DDT was advertised7 as completely harmless, and sold to an unsuspecting public with catchy slogans like “DDT is Good for Me-e-e!” Heck, they even sold DDT-laced wallpaper8 specifically designed for children’s rooms! And it was “certified to be absolutely safe for home use.”

Today, we have glyphosate which, just like DDT, has been falsely advertised, and falsely ”certified” and “guaranteed” as safe. Besides being identified as a likely causative factor in fertility problems and birth defects, research also shows that glyphosate:

Decimates beneficial microorganisms in the soil essential for proper plant function and high quality nutrition Causes extreme disruption of your gut microbes’ function and lifecycle;preferentially affecting beneficial bacteria, while promoting the growth of pathogens in your intestines
Chelates critical microminerals, preventing them from being utilized by the plant (leading to nutrient-deficient food) Inhibits enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of organic substances, which appears to be an overlooked component of glyphosate’s toxicity to mammals. By limiting the ability of these enzymes to detoxify foreign chemical compounds, glyphosate enhances the damaging effects of those chemicals and environmental toxins you may be exposed to
Promotes the proliferation of disease-causing pathogens in soil Is toxic to water fleas at extraordinarily low levels, well within the levels expected to be found in the environment. These findings throw serious doubt on glyphosate’s safety
Predisposes cattle to lethal botulism Is toxic to human DNA even when diluted to concentrations 450-fold lower than used in agricultural applications

Other Hidden Health Hazards Associated with Phosphate Fertilizers

Polonium-210 is a highly radioactive element9 that releases alpha particles as it decays. It’s also chemically toxic.10 While alpha particles cannot penetrate deeply into your body, they can cause serious damage to cells they do come into contact with. While naturally present in small amounts in the environment, one of the primary sources of exposure is via calcium phosphate fertilizers, commonly used on tobacco fields and food crops.

Researchers have gone so far as to suggest that it’s the radiation from these fertilizers that are the primary cause of cancer in smokers.111213 According to a report in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research,14 radioactivity in tobacco comes from two sources: the atmosphere and uptake through soil rich in calcium phosphate fertilizer contaminated with polonium phosphates.

You can also consume polonium by drinking fluoridated water, courtesy of the fluorosilicic acid used. This chemical byproduct, created during the phosphate fertilizer manufacturing process, is what is typically used to fluoridate municipal water supplies. Uranium and radium are two known carcinogens found in fluorosilicic acid used for water fluoridation, and polonium-210 is one of two decay products of uranium. Furthermore, polonium decays into stable lead-206, which also has significant health risks—especially in children—and research has indeed shown that drinking fluoridated water increases lead absorption in your body.

Phosphate Fertilizers Also Used in GMO Agriculture

Phosphate fertilizers are also used on food crops. And while food-borne polonium may be absorbed and react differently in your body than being inhaled, you could potentially be exposed to greater levels of this (and other) radioactive elements than previously thought, through the aggressive use of phosphate fertilizers in food production. Besides the risk of radioactive contamination, research has shown that dietary calcium phosphate has a detrimental effect on your gut health—an effect shared by glyphosate, which also decimates your gut flora. According to a 2002 study in the Journal of Nutrition:15

“Most Gram-positive bacteria are susceptible to the bactericidal action of fatty acids and bile acids. Because dietary calcium phosphate (CaP(i)) lowers the intestinal concentration of these antimicrobial agents, high CaP(i) intake may enhance intestinal colonization of Gram-positive pathogens and the subsequent pathogenesis.”

Taken together, modern agricultural methods may at first glance appear to be the most cost effective and efficient strategy, but it quickly becomes one of the most costly ways to produce food once you take into account the environmental and human health consequences.

Moreover, processed food manufacturers, represented by the Grocery Manufacturers Association of America (GMA), is working hand-in-hand with the chemical technology industry to force this food model on the world, with tax payers subsidizing the very food that will promotes disease and wreaks havoc on the environment. The GMA is spearheading the efforts of these industries to prevent you from knowing the truth about what you’re really eating, and control the food system at virtually any cost, it seems.

Greatest Purveyors of Disease Fight to Maintain Control of the Food System

As you may recall, during last year’s I-522 ballot campaign to label GMOs in Washington State, the GMA came up with an ingenious, and illegal, money laundering scheme to protect the identity of members who donated funds to the opposing campaign.16

This illegal move helped them defeat I-522 by a mere one percent margin. The scheme fell apart however, and the GMA was sued by Attorney General Bob Ferguson,17 who accused them of intentional money laundering and violating state campaign disclosure laws. As a result, the identities of the companies paying to defeat I-522 were released.18 Not surprisingly it contained the usual suspects: Pepsi, Coke, General Mills and Nestle – all primary purveyors of chronic disease.

But that’s not the end of the story.

On January 13, the Washington State Office of the Attorney General announced that the GMA has countersued the state, challenging its campaign finance laws.19 Essentially, the Association is suing for the right to hide corporate campaign funds—a move that threatens the transparency of the state’s elections on every issue! What’s more, the GMA has also filed a civil rights complaint against the Attorney General himself, claiming that he acted unconstitutionally when he enforced the state’s laws! It would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious. This is bullying at its finest. As recently reported by TakePart.com:20

If you don’t live in Washington state and are wondering why you should care, A. Bryan Enders, associate professor of agricultural law at the University of Illinois, has food for thought. ’This is part of a larger narrative involving increased consumer awareness,’ he says. ‘The GMA countersuit can be viewed as not pro- or anti-consumer but about maintaining control over the messaging of our food system. As various states respond to consumer demand for heightened food labels, this shifts control away from GMA and its members and places it within the hands of diffuse consumer interests.’

The latest countersuit isn’t GMA’s only stick in the fire. According to Reuters, the trade group is working with a coalition including biotech crop developers and unnamed lawmakers to introduce federal GMO labeling legislation—legislation that would have the power to nullify individual state laws, a tactic public health lawyer Michele Simon spoke with us about in September. ‘The devil is in the details,’ Simon said. ‘Industry will agree to federal labeling, but in exchange, they say, ‘we want to preempt or stop any states from going further.’”

Biological Farming Is the Way Out of This Mess

Last year, I interviewed Dr. Elaine Ingham, an internationally recognized expert on the benefits of sustainable soil science. According to Dr. Ingham and other soil experts, a key component of successful agriculture lies in having the right helper organisms in the soil; beneficial species of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, beneficial nematodes (not the weedfeeders), microarthropods, and earthworms—all of which contribute to plant growth in a number of different ways.

Nutrient cycling is another major issue. Dr. Ingham believes the concept that your soil is deficient and needs added phosphorus or nitrogen, etc. in order to grow plants is seriously flawed, and largely orchestrated by the chemical companies, because it’s based on looking at the soluble, inorganic nutrients that are partly present in your soil. The real nutrition plants require is actually derived from microorganisms in the soil. These organisms take the mineral material in the soil and convert it into a plant-available form. Without these bioorganisms, plants cannot get the nutrients they need.

So what you need is not more chemical soil additives, what you need is the proper balance of beneficial soil organisms. You can actually use a starter culture to boost the fermentation and generation of beneficial bacteria much in the same way you can boost the probiotics in your fermented vegetables.

For compost, this strategy is used if you want to compost very rapidly. In that case, you can use a starter to inoculate the specific sets of organisms for your garden’s particular needs. Dr. Ingham has written several books on this topic, including The Field Guide for Actively Aerated Compost Tea, and The Compost Tea Brewing Manual. You can also greatly enhance the benefits of compost or compost tea by adding biochar, as it serves as residence where the bacteria can live and thrive; otherwise they tend to die out relatively rapidly after adding them to the soil.

Eat Well and Help Save Farmers by Supporting Sustainable Agriculture

With everything we now know about the benefits of organically grown foods, and the health and environmental hazards of chemical farming, there’s no doubt that HOW your food is grown is of utmost importance to your health. This is why I encourage you to support small family farms, and to buy organic whenever possible.

Another alternative is to grow some of your own vegetables. Sprouts are an excellent choice if you’re just getting started, or if you want to grow the most nutritious food for the least amount of time and money. Frequenting farmer’s markets and joining a community-supported agriculture program are other options. Below are several resources to obtain wholesome food that supports not only you but also the environment and the farmers who grow your food.

When we walk into a carefully nurtured and diverse garden, we are struck by its beauty and its sense of completeness. We are enraptured by its scents and its mysteries. We are enlivened by its colours, both vivid and subtle, and we are nourished by the freshness that fills our lungs.

Altogether, the majority of sentient beings will surely concur, this garden is a most agreeable place to be – and should someone emerge who threatens to desecrate this sacred space – the reaction will be to jump to its defence and protect it against such a criminal action.

So let us consider the fact that many a wise person and many a spiritual leader has felt impelled to point out that “The World Is Our Garden” and that it should therefore be tended, nurtured and defended in the same way as the private space in which we grow our flowers, fruits, vegetables and herbs. Emotionally, we should make no distinction between these micro and macro spheres.

Yet look around today and what do we see?

Certainly there are many mortals tending their individual gardens, and many more with no physical garden to tend. But amongst of all these, just a tiny minority can be found who are willing to go out of their way to stand-up for that greater garden called planet Earth.

Even amongst those who would class themselves as ‘aware’ and advancing along the path of spiritual enlightenment, one finds too few ready and willing to actively defend the greater whole in the same spirit as they readily defend and tend their ‘own’ private space. Be that space the place where one cultivates one’s spiritual growth – or the physical space that is one’s own  garden.

The act of ‘ownership’ appears to have overridden and nullified our ability to feel and apply a sense of innate responsibility for that which we don’t ‘own’.

The neo-liberal capitalist/consumerist conditioning that forms a major part of nearly all our educations – has not taught us to feel responsible for all life – but only that part in which we have invested our personal interest and financial resources.

We need reminding that we are the collective trustees of this unique living entity that sustains and provides us with all our needs for the duration of our lives – and beyond.

Let us question our supposed ‘spirituality’ in the light of our unwillingness to lay ourselves on the line to fight for the survival of that which enables us to eat, drink, breathe and take pleasure in its abundant generosity.

You see, if we had been entrained from an early age to respond spontaneously to the life giving heart beat of our planetary existence, we would make no distinction between empathy for the garden of Gaia and empathy for our own private garden. Empathy for all children and empathy for our own children .. and so on.

We would recognize that the manifestation of our protective instinct to operate only around that which we consider ‘belongs to us’ is a gross distortion of our natural instincts.

Why do I say that?

Consider for a moment that you are sitting in your garden and someone comes through the gate with a chain-saw and proceeds to set about felling your favourite fruit tree … what would you do?

Well, you would almost certainly spring up from your chair and rush to stop them. Now let us shift to a similar incident where a beautiful tree in a park on the other side of your garden fence is indiscriminately approached by a man wielding a chain saw who clearly has no business to be there. It is clear that this person has the intention of cutting down this tree … what would your reaction be to this? Would you try to apprehend this person? Try to find help? Feel a sense of outrage?

There is a chance that you might respond in all these ways; but there is a much greater likelihood that, after experiencing some initial discomfort at the brazenness of this destructive intent, you would take no action, consoling yourself with the thought “There’s nothing I can do about it anyway”. With that thought uppermost in your mind you would try to ignore the incident and get on with what you were doing. 

If our education system had even a smidgeon of spiritual aspiration written into its curriculum – we would be encouraged to recognize our responsibility for all life on this planet from an early age – and be encouraged to come to its rescue at times when it is clearly under threat.

But that is not what the majority of schooling is about. On the contrary, it concentrates its energies on teaching us how to acquire the means to ‘own’ some little niche of this planet, and to accumulate the thousands of bits and pieces that are deemed necessary to furnish it. God forbid that we might decide to reject the trappings of this hallowed road to hell!

Every TV advert, commercial hoarding, glitzy magazine, shop window, internet and cinema screen – is imploring us to indulge in a consumptive way of life that both precludes gaining a greater awareness of our predicament, and contributes to the inevitable rape of the planetary resources upon which we all depend.

The rising consciousness that comes with our spiritual practice also has the affect of alerting us to the destructive nature of this consumptive life style and the majority of jobs that constitute the repetitive and largely sterile working week.

We see more and more clearly how, if we are caught in this mechanism, we are just a cog in a vast machine whose overall ambition is precisely the opposite of that which inspires our spiritual endeavours.

It soon becomes obvious that we have to make a choice: find a form of work that satisfies our rising sense of discernment and is supportive of the trusteeship of planet earth, or give-in to the demands and promises of the corporate state that so relentlessly undermines all that is subtle, beautiful and spiritually fulfilling in this day to day adventure called Life.

The new society so many of us long for can only come about if we take the necessary actions to bring it about. One cannot embark upon a path to higher consciousness while ignoring the damage done through the way one conducts one’s daily life. In order to realise our deeper selves and sleeping spiritual powers, we have to bring all aspects of our lives into line with our rising consciousness.

This means embarking upon a disciplined transition away from reliance upon the crude and destructive commercial edifices of the status quo – such as long food mile, profit hungry supermarket chains; highly corrupted large scale banking institutions; agrichemically and genetically modified ‘convenience’ foods; unnecessarily large gas guzzling cars; mind numbing and mind controlling TV programmes; following ‘fashion’; frequent boozing and partying; electro smog producing indulgent cell phone conversations … and so on.

Not only are these various pursuits negatively impacting on us and on our surroundings – but by pursuing them we are financially and energetically supporting those facets of society whose sole aim is profit, power and increasing control over our daily lives. In other words we are supporting that which is part and parcel of the uninterrupted destruction of this ‘world that is our garden’.

This is clearly a thoroughly unspiritual path to tread.

We are either supporting a radical transformation of society in line with our own rising awareness of its multiple destructive components, or we are falling into a hypocritical and delusional state in which any gain in awareness is soon undone and turned in upon itself.

We have no choice other than to walk forward on two feet. To ‘walk the walk’ and to practice what we preach.

It is my belief that we will succeed in this great quest once we have securely tethered our inner awakening to the manifestation of its true outward expression.

Thus the road to enlightenment becomes synonymous with taking actions to ameliorate and heal the social, cultural, economic and environmental scars that cover our wounded planet. A process which unifies otherwise disparate endeavours and reveals disengaged, inward looking and passive spiritual practices – that shun active participation in service of the planet – to be ultimately fraudulent and a mechanism for escapism.

If ‘The World is our garden’ then let us be united now in going to rescue it from its enemies – no matter what the odds. Let us defy the political gamesmanship that has lead governments to ally with the corporate cause and ignore the cries of imprisoned humanity and the tortured limbs of mother nature.

Our highest spiritual calling is to come out in defence of life.* The angels will rush to our side once we have demonstrated our commitment to taking control of our destinies, which includes the emancipation of this long oppressed planet which is our unique and irreplaceable home.

If you are still spraying your nursery flowers and plants with neonicotinoid insecticides, you are likely interrupting an age-old dance carried out between bees and flowers. Not only are bees dying from the use of these dangerous chemicals, but the act is interrupting a long and beneficial history between the two.

According to Professor Daniel Robert from the University of Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences, bumble bees carry a positive electrical charge that helps them find flowers, which are charged negatively, in a field or garden. Science is just discovering how sophisticated a bee’s communication is with the world around it, and this is just another example of how biotech arrogance can’t trump nature’s incredible intelligence.

Flowers acquire a negative charge since they are grounded in soil, and the fast-beating wings of a bee, acquire a positive charge as they stir up surrounding air with more than 200 beats per second of their tiny appendages. The positive charge builds up on their bodies the same way that it does when we walk across carpet can then create a spark when a grounded metal or body is touched. Even though bees don’t generate a spark, scientists have found that the hairs on a bees body ‘stand up’ when it approaches the electrical field of a flower. The bee also memorizes this electrostatic force and returns to areas it experiences the electrical field of flowers. Over time, this allows the bumble bee to determine which flowers to visit, and thus help pollinate.

Bees are also sensitive to ultraviolet light that is emitted from flowers when they are ripe and ready, overflowing with the essence of life – pollen and nectar. This light is really just stored energy from the sun and stars in our universe. A typical quasar contains 3.6 × 1039 of power, a miniscule amount of energy that is present in all living organisms.

Bees can even sense a flower’s fragrance, and can determine if other bees have depleted the flower’s nectar supply through a mutual charge exchange. A flower’s electric field is reduced slightly when another bee visits it, and when the flower becomes depleted of pollen another bee knows that flower is ‘tapped out.’ Essentially, the weaker the electric field, the more bees have already landed on that flower, so it sends a message to other bees of the potential of that particular flower for pollen and nectar gathering.

Flowers only replenish their electrical charges (and thus their nectar, and pollen) slowly through their overall structure – so you can imagine what happens when we douse our plants with chemicals that impede a flower’s electrical force field.

Neonicotinoids are absorbed into a flower’s plant stem and leaves, and are even present in its pollen and nectar. The residues of neonicotinoids are often lethal in one dose, but surely they also interfere in a flower’s ability to have a high negative charge by which bees find them in order to collect their pollen and help pollinate other flowers and crops.

We are similar to the flowers, says Dr. James Oschman, and need to be grounded into the earth where negative charges accumulate due to lightening strikes in the ionosphere. This is why grounding – or walking barefoot on the earth can help to reduce the positive charge build up in the body which is associated to ill health. The earth is alive with an unlimited source of ‘free electrons.’ When we connect to the earth with bare skin, it re-stabilizes electric fields in our own bodies, re-setting our entire body from an electric point of view – helping our brains to communication between cells. A balanced electromagnetic charge is essential.

“Although astrocytes have been considered to be supportive, rather than transmissive, in the adult nervous system, recent studies have challenged this assumption by demonstrating that astrocytes possess functional neurotransmitter receptors. Astrocytes are now shown to directly modulate the free cytosolic calcium, and hence transmission characteristics, of neighboring neurons. When a focal electric field potential was applied to single astrocytes in mixed cultures of rat forebrain astrocytes and neurons, a prompt elevation of calcium occurred in the target cell. This in turn triggered a wave of calcium increase, which propagated from astrocyte to astrocyte. Neurons resting on these astrocytes responded with large increases in their concentration of cytosolic calcium.”

When biotech messes with the chemical structure of flowers, it confuses bees, and this may be another reason the pollinators are all dying off. Our bodies are no different. When we ingest herbicides and pesticides to great degree, they interfere with our electrical-chemical signals and ruin our health.

Consider this article which details what happens to the central nervous system including the brain with prolonged exposure to organophosphates. Essentially, it leads to neuro-degeneration caused by an enzyme that acts on acetylcholine neurotransmitters, resulting in ADHD and Gulf War Syndrome, to name a few outcomes.

We are next in line for our ‘wires’ to be crossed from pesticide and herbicide use, and the killing off of bees and flowers is a clear sign that nature is being stressed to its limits. The subtlety of an electric universe should not be overlooked, and Mother Nature is wise beyond any multi-national corporation. It’s time we pay more attention.

New research shows most Americans place importance on the protection of the ailing monarch butterfly, which is experiencing a steep decline in numbers. The study, published in Conservation Letters, found nearly three-quarters of those surveyed support conservation efforts for the iconic species, and are willing to spend several billion dollars to help.

The monarch is the official insect or butterfly of seven U.S. states, and is celebrated in a number of festivals held across North America. The annual migration of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is one of nature’s most beautiful sights. Millions of the insects migrate annually from the as far north as Nova Scotia all the way down to wintering grounds in the forests of Mexico, a journey of up to 3,000 miles (4,800 kilometers) that takes four generations.

However, each year fewer and fewer monarch butterflies make the trip, as populations have been declining across North America for about 15 years. Recent surveys at the wintering grounds of monarchs in Mexico showed the lowest colony size ever recorded.

To estimate population size, researchers measured monarch numbers while they were assembled en mass at their wintering grounds. During the 2013-2014 winter season, the butterflies covered 0.67 hectares in Mexico’s forests, a drop of 44 percent from 2012. Overall, the average monarch coverage from 1994-2014 was 6.39 hectares – nearly ten times higher than the 2013 estimation.

Much of the decline in monarch numbers has been blamed on the loss of milkweed, the native plants on which monarch caterpillars feed. Karen Oberhauser, a monarch biologist from the University of Minnesota and co-author of the study, said breeding, migrating and overwintering habitat loss are the main factors affecting monarch populations.

“In the U.S., the growing use of genetically-modified, herbicide-tolerant crops, such as corn and soybeans, has resulted in a severe decline in milkweed, and thus a loss of breeding habitat,” Oberhauser said.

The findings of the study showed more than half of the American respondents were “not aware” of the declines in monarch populations, while 39 percent were familiar with the issue. Seventy percent of those questioned believed conserving monarchs was important, while three percent said it was not important.

According to Jay Diffendorfer, a USGS scientist and the study’s lead author, while the multigenerational migration of the monarch butterfly is considered one of the world’s most spectacular events, protection of the species is challenging.

“Managing migratory species is difficult because they can cross international borders and depend on many geographic areas for survival,” he said. “However, the life cycle of monarchs creates opportunities for untapped market-based conservation approaches.

The survey asked respondents across the U.S. whether they would be happy to donate money for the conservation of monarchs, and whether they would pay to plant monarch-friendly nectar or milkweed plants.

The researchers received heartening responses to the survey. In total, their study indicates that the U.S. public is willing to spend between $4.78 billion and $6.64 billion to help protect the monarch butterfly.

“The study shows that not only might consumers pay more for monarch-friendly milkweeds grown without systemic insecticides in the potting soil, but also that consumers might be more interested overall in buying nectar-producing plants or milkweeds if they knew a small percentage of sales will be donated to habitat conservation,” Diffendorfer said.

“Ordinary households, conservation organizations, and natural resource agencies can all plant milkweed and flowering plants to offset ongoing losses in the species’ breeding habitat.”

I remember my grandmother’s breasts: Grandma Ida, sitting in the big chair by the window, holding my newborn, firstborn son. He was sleeping in her arms, and her arms were resting on breasts that seemed to reach even below her waist. Grandma didn’t want me to come and take my sleeping son, and put him in a bassinet… she loved babies, holding babies. Who had the heart to go and take him away? Not me.

Grandma nursed nine children and kept them all alive in the early days of the 20th century. A Norwegian immigrant, she and her family had migrated to the U.S. Midwest: prairie country. They lived near the Missouri River with their first shelter being a home constructed of sod, dug out of a hillside. One cannot imagine how harsh it was, and difficult to keep nine children alive and growing, but they did it.

Looking at photos it’s obvious those big breasts were strapped down and tucked in. Far away into the future was the thought of putting them into a bra, protruding them into cone shapes, or uplifting them and displaying the cleavage as a ‘don’t touch’ invitation. Grandpa apparently enjoyed Grandma’s voluptuous softness at least nine times, and the babies got the full load of nurture and intimacy.

Fast forward 100 years to silicone implants, see-through clothing, breast titillation everywhere, and breast cancer. Somewhere along the way we heard complaints about the objectification of the woman’s body, and then the man’s body… but who really understood what that was all about. Most of us agreed to it, got into it, and worried that we weren’t ‘good enough’ in the boobs department. I doubt that Grandma would have been able to comprehend such a thought.

Now let’s pull back our lens and look at the earth – our feminine, rich, nurturing, life-giving mother. We’re all ashamed of what’s going on with her. Many of us say RAPE! She’s being raped and trashed – her forests leveled, her hills cut down, her crust penetrated. We see an unquenchable thirst to break open the earth and extract her treasures. And what does she do to cope with the exploitation and the toxic burden? She begins to quake, and her surface and oceans begin to die.

It has been shown that permaculture can bring the dying parts of the earth back to life and feed us all. It has been shown that the earth has her own restorative process with regard to forests and water and air… if allowed to accomplish it. It has been shown that certain of her plants can clean and heal her and us… and remember… we ARE of her. It has been shown that the elimination of poverty is key to humans naturally controlling population.

It has also been shown that we are inventive and creative with regard to recovery. So we are not lost from a future heaven on earth, as many of us are awakening to our condition. The feminine aspect of divinity is returning, and ‘She’ in all of us may lead us to the root of this insanity and give us inspiration to envision in a new direction.

In our current condition, which we are told is an ‘advanced’ civilization, the earth’s ability to nurture is being destroyed, and so is our human ability. One in eight women today have been diagnosed with breast cancer, and I’m one in the eight, so this search for the root is meaningful to me.

In my own case, I do believe that too much nurture, along with psychological stress and ‘running on empty’ for several years, invited cancer cells to get aggressive in the breast. We can’t go back and change circumstances, and to be quite honest, I did get something from it: that ‘something’ is a stronger connection to the divine, a decision to live, and a willingness to say and do what I will, i.e. if I don’t say what I feel now, and do what I can now, then will I ever?

We all know about the savage treatment for breast cancer that our medical culture approves of and is willing to finance… cutting out of the breast tissue, killing of cancerous and non-cancerous cells, replacement with silicone implants, and then hope and pray. It seems that as long as the shape of the breast is still there, whether our tissue is able to remember the babies or not, or our skin able to feel the touch of a lover or not… it’s okay. It’s so okay that even women without breast cancer are doing it, because a movie star did it.

Some women go for the alternative treatments, which men and women of conscience are bringing onto the scene through activism, studies, research and at great personal effort and cost. Nature is gaining ground, and I can see it even in the awareness of MDs who are entrenched in the cancer industry. Nature’s healing power will be shown to be superior eventually… but until all women, including those from the lowest economic bracket, can choose and fund an alternative to the well-funded system, it’s no win as yet.

We’ve covered a good deal of ground on the subject of breasts, but we haven’t talked about the denser, darker realms where the root of our disconnect must lie. These realms consume and control energy, manifesting in violence, rape, slavery, death and sexual abuse of even the most innocent. Can we discuss this without casting at least a sideways glance into the denser realms? I think we have to go there.

Deprive is the opposite of nurture. I believe that the densest realms are constructed of fear. Great is the fear of being deprived of life… and greater still, dying without knowing Self. It’s a cold, cold place, filled with those insane perversions into which the desire for more ‘physical/emotional sensation’ descends. It’s a grab for more heat… more energy. Human beings have tried to get past fear of death for millennia, and death as ‘sacrifice’ is evidence enough of that.

Breasts are our first promise of life. They are the message that yes, child, you will live, your body will live, and I have everything you need, right here, for you to live… just drink. That invitation to live is also the earth’s message and all of nature’s message: nature has everything you need, right here, for you live. Just receive it, share it and tend to its renewal.

Knowing Self: perhaps now is the time, for some of us at least, to experience fearless living – life in the knowledge that energy never ends, and ‘nurture never ends’.

There is a great change occurring in our consciousness… a gradual realization that as consciousness/energy/information, we are far more vast than we can explore… and yet a tiny fraction of the Source information. As a part of Source, and thus eternal, we enter a metaphysical spirituality.

Our physical bodies of course go through death, as is the pattern of the natural world. But the I that observes the I… it is the real, true Self. The observer is not the body or the brain or the emotions; it is the Higher Self experiencing the physical plane… experiencing all that the physical plane has to offer, including the dense realms.

What is the opposite of fear? Some might say courage, but I would say trust. As we grow in trust that we are both the doer and the observer, the joy of life is easier to access, as is the energy of love’s divinity… there always, for all. We can become fearless in that trust as we collectively encounter this time of great change… this global brush with death.

Is it okay if I close with a return to Grandma Ida? She was far from diplomatic in her opinions, and sweetness was not one of her attributes. Granddaughters did not walk in front of her wearing a miniskirt, at least not more than once, and neighbors were well advised to ‘straighten up’ if they planned to visit. But Grandpa seemed to like her a lot. He got a free pass, and so did every one of her nine children. They were utterly and completely loved, in their error and in their virtue: they could do no wrong in Grandma’s eyes.

What an unbreakable tie there is in nurture, and we are never without it… love IS it. Targeting breasts is targeting love, and that’s a losing venture. Love always has been and always will be – live with it!

The matrix has us. It surrounds and keeps us busy working diligently within its nifty little paradigms, hard at work at our own enslavement and self-destruction. Behind the scenes of every aspect of life are codes, regulations, rules and agendas we cannot see, but yet are there to keep us in line and disconnected from true health and prosperity.

If you’ve mustered the consciousness to see through at least some of the illusions that govern our sickly world, then you already know that the truth about the human condition and human potential does not have a voice in the history books, and that double-speak and programming are the lead factors in turning practical concepts into impractical, unachievable feats of defiance.

Take the notion of revolution, for instance.

Just the word revolution conjures up certain images, different for all, to be sure, but usually inclusive of blood, guts, chaotic battle, betrayal, struggle, loss and so on. This is what the word has come to represent for many in our world today, thanks in part to the programmers who write the lexicon and indoctrinate the masses. Revolution has a negative connotation, and is associated with hazard, hopelessness and futility. It is almost always exclusively militaristic, involving brute force and warfare. It is thought of as a scary, dangerous proposition, with no place in a civilized society of laws and rules and order. It is a last resort for the scandalous, those willing to out themselves as betrayers of the system at large.

Revolution, by dictionary definition is the overthrow or radical restructuring of a government or political system, or a sudden or complete change or restructuring of something. It can also mean a complete turning of something. By this understanding, the term holds many more possibilities for human action than just taboo political warring.

Because our world is so poorly managed, abused and in such terrible condition, it is incumbent upon thoughtful people to radically reform and completely change their own lives, and to engage in and participate in action that effectively undermines and chips away at the status quo systems and paradigms that control us and keep us bound to self-destructive behaviors and indebted to corrupt rulers.

In this light, there are ample opportunities for an individual or a community to participate in a new kind of revolution which seeks to dramatically change the systems that govern our life. Take, for example the works and inspiration of these 3 modern day revolutionaries, who are undermining the matrix with their common sense and innovation.

1. The Garbage Warrior, architect Mike Reynolds has for the last 30 years bee waging a revolution in how we live. Known as the creator of the ‘Earthship,’ his ideas for constructing sustainable, self-contained housing out of recycled materials has sparked a global movement to develop the next generation of buildings. Motivated by the imminent prospect of global environmental catastrophe, he has faced criticism and even punitive legal action to prevent his ideas from going viral, yet today, earthships are growing in popularity around the world and workshops that teach his design philosophies and techniques can be found almost any weekend.

2. Joel Salatin is the king of organic farming and owner of Polyface Farm in Virginia. Joel has become the nation’s top advocate for natural, cruelty-free animal products and direct farm-to-customer marketing. 3. Ron Finley is the guerrilla gardener from South Central Los Angeles who after growing disgusted with the lack of fresh foods in his neighborhood, where too many people were becoming overweight and falling ill to chronic diseases like diabetes, he became a leader for urban farming and community gardening. In February of 2013, Ron gave a TED talk that quickly inspired many new urban farming movements and rekindled the urbanites interest in fresh foods. He is both humorous and hard-working and his charisma and passion for quality food is contagious.

Conclusion

Its no secret, the powers that be work overtime to ensure that the masses are unhealthy, disconnected from their food supply, and coerced into living meaningless materialistic and overly-consumptive lifestyles. By following the example of these great pioneers of modern violence-free revolution, it will be easy for you to participate in the cultural reset that is needed to bring an end to the self-destructive control freak world we have today.
