Gene, The China Study was actually the first book on nutrition I read that got me interested in nutrition. I should have worded it "there is absolutely legitimate no study. . .”. I haven't read it in a number of years, so I don't remember all the details, but after much study I have come to realize that "The China Study" has taken so many liberties with science it should never been published, or at least been classified as propaganda. I will let a nutrition scientist explain some of the many problems with the study.

As far as grass fed meat not being available, if people started buying it, it would become available. I raised my own meat, but it is available in most stores around here and can be purchased online. It is more expensive, but so is almost all organic food. I would consider it to be the single most important food to buy in its naturally raised state.

Mark,

Good comments, but your remark "there is absolutely no study. . ." disregards the book titled "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell which authoritatively refutes everything you said about meat. I don't necessarily agree with the book's findings, but it is out there and should be well studied by nutrition consultants. Secondly, the "grass fed animals" you refer to are generally unavailable to the typical consumer. Meat from feed lot animals will most likely be loaded with hormones and antibiotics, not to mention being coated with carcinogenic nitrates and nitrites as preservatives. Likewise, pork lard is a healthy fat - but only so long as it has NOT been hydrogenated, which can be somewhat difficult to locate except at health food stores or farmers' markets. Perhaps the only truly healthy meat is that which you raise and slaughter yourself, and then eat raw.

I am currently in school studying to be a nutrition consultant. As such, I have been studying all the latest research on nutrition. Much of what Dr. Pochelli says is true; however, on a couple of things she is completely wrong. First, there is absolutely no study that shows that meat, milk products or fat from grass fed animals causes any type of disease, not diabetes, cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, or anything else. A recent book, The Great Cholesterol Myth, goes into great detail proving that very thing. Many others have come out in recent years proclaiming the exact same thing. Second, studies by both George Watson in his book "Nutrition and Your Mind", and Rudolf Wiley in his book "Biobalance", show conclusively that meat is in fact alkalizing to the body. Diet is not a one size fits all. Some people do very well on a vegetarian or low animal product diet, others would do horribly on it. Each person is different. If someone is going to write and profess to be a nutrition expert, they need to know the facts.
