On 14 December in Portland, OR, I had some dental X-Rays at Green Apple Dental. The dental tech used a hand-held pistol shaped X-Ray machine which was used with the usual uncomfortable in-mouth frames and films. It did not have a cord, so I'm assuming it uses rechargeable batteries.

Every day I use a handheld XRF (x ray frequency) analyzer to assay scrap gold and even crushed up catalytic converters. As a student of science, I was in fact worried about the x ray exposure from using the device, and actually convinced my employer to pay for an array of dosimeters (actually seven units connected to a pc) to monitor my exposure. After more than a year of using it, my dosimeters have yet to indicate ANY exposure beyond "background".

That's not to say that such a unit in ignorant hands would not be any different to a moron holding a handgun...
